: Temp question........
blaauboer Apr 21st, 04, 3:56 PM Whats everyone running for temps.......Mine was running 210 or so ....I put a new thermostat (160 ) in and now its 180 cruising and 200 in traffic......So it's better but seems a bit high still......Seems I have to put a new stat in once a year
Is taking the stat out an option etc.....I'm running dual 12 inch electric fans and a cheap Napa water pump.....
Temp outside right now is 65.....
Rebuilt the carb and all is good....I love smoking the tires at 50mph
blumont Apr 21st, 04, 4:17 PM Scott, I think a quality pump like Stewart would really help you out. It sure worked for mine

onebadd66 Apr 21st, 04, 5:28 PM I had simular problem, but not as many cubes as you :D was running 200-210. put on Alum. water pump,160 stat, water wetter,(works wonders)now temps are at 160-170.Any time/ any where. If that don't do the trick, you can always go the alum rad route ;)

Tracy Focht Apr 21st, 04, 5:37 PM my 406 was the same...moved to an aluminum radiator, 160 thermostat and aluminum waterpump, and water wetter...never saw 195 even when 100 degrees out.
billyb70canada Apr 21st, 04, 5:45 PM I also had similar temperatures to yours on my big block,(not nearly as many cubes) with a 4 core copper rad. Went to a Stewart Stage 1 cast with THEIR 160 thermostat and my temps dropped about 10-15 deg. Have old GM 4 blade which I am going to replace with a Zirgo 3300 CFM electric this spring. ;)
Bruce71convt Apr 22nd, 04, 4:04 PM I also installed a Stewart Stage 1 pump and their 160 deg thermo. Now in mid 70s-80 weather my 406 is running about 175 deg and 180 in hotter weather, but doesn't exceed 205 idling with standard antifreeze and modern non-aluminum radiator. Stewart's web-site is a goldmine where you can ask cooling related questions and view others from the past.
70ss496 Apr 22nd, 04, 5:50 PM Scott, my 496 runs about 180-185 all the time, it got up to 190 once in heavy traffic in 100 degree weather. Other than that always 180 or 185 and drove anyday I wanted to last summer. I'm running a 180 stat, same aluminum radiator as Tom(mc71454), stock clutch fan, and also a 502/502 cast iron water pump from GM Perfomance Parts. Hope that helps.

MO_chevelle Apr 22nd, 04, 10:40 PM I was also having cooling issues that I could not find a good cure for, so today I dropped $350 for a new aluminum radiator and a stewart stage II water pump. A lot of people here reccomend Stewart, I think a stage I was $80 and a stage II was $160 for SBC. A lot of people say too drill 1 or 2 1/8" holes in your t-stat, so you always have water going through it and when it is open it flows more than normal.
JRS70LS5 Apr 23rd, 04, 12:16 PM Scott, where do you have your temp sensor at I have mine in the heads and in traffic I run around 205,and never had a problem.
