Sorry I don't know much, just that i've beat on my Lock-rite for 2 years and its fine. I think someone on here has one in a 10 second car too. Thats all I can give you, an opinion.:D

I liked my brute strength when I had a 12 bolt.

spider gears were weak on my Auburn = severe metal fatigue on the ninth drag run:(

If it's a drag car, why bother with a differential? Just go with a full spool.

If it's a drag car, why bother with a differential? Just go with a full spool. That's^ a very good point, but if you won't be trailering the car to the strip, or if you'll be driving it to any shows, cruise nights, or just romping around on the street once in awhile, then I'd have to say that the Detriot Locker would be the way to go since it's likely the most durable. There aren't any clutches, nor spider gears to wear out, and you can still negotiate turns w/out having to spin the tires through the turn, nor worry about breaking an axle like you might have to with a spool.

if the car won't see any street time at all though, then I agree..go spool

I don't understand the part about breaking axles on the street? I ran a spool for several years in the 80's and my Camaro has had one for 7 years. Never broke an axle and the only time I notice it is when making slow turns in a parking lot.

How many miles do you put on it per year? I mean while taking turns with a set-up that won't allow the rear wheels to rotate at different speeds, something has to give regardless of what speed you're driving. Right? Do you have to leave rubber around turns?

The tires do not last long with a spool. When it was my DD I put about 3,000 miles on it per year. A pair of T/A radials would only last about a couple years. Drag radials last about 1 year and ET Streets last less than a year. I just drive it normally, the inside tire will scrub rubber off the tire in a tight turn.

Thanks for your reply Steve. Well, drag radials never last very long on the street anyway. Even if a spool isn't used. I seem to remember somebody on here mentioning that they broke an axle while driving on the street with a spool. So that's why I brought it up, since it seemed believeable to me. However, I'll admit that I cannot speak from experience on the topic of spools being used on the street.

Thanks Billy. I have also heard others say you will break an axle by running a spool on the street. I haven't had any problems and had to ask when it came up again.:beers:

My old speed shop friend says a spool isn't ideal on the street but he ran his for over 10 years in his 12 second 69 Road Runner without a problem. He said the axles fail because of exceleration and tight turns around corners. He said he always stopped back enough to get some speed up going straight and then turned as wide as possible at a steady speed. He did say though tire wear is unavoidable with a spool.:)

I vote Detroit truetrac, for true streetability and dragstrip performance.

Good stuff in this thread. I've always used Detroit Lockers for 4x4 offroad so I guess it makes since to use for the drag strip. Keep the commits coming.... =)

Ok I run a spool in my car on the street. drive 50 miles one way to the local drag strip race all day and drive it home. got a guy in the club with a 66 lemans with a mini spool beats the snot out of it on the street with a spool no broken parts as of yet. I know a few others local running spools on the street. My personal experiance is corners are slower. yes tire wear is more prevalent but if it is a drag car they wont last that long anyway if you burning them off right? enough said

That is exactly what I would do. You will not break axles or wear your tires out any faster on the street with a spool.

I think you'll find that most of the negative comments about spools come from those that don't run one and are basing their opinions off "a friend of a friend said" type stuff.

PS. My tire wear is directly proportional to the number of burnouts and quarter mile passes that I make. Never noticed a difference when switching from a posi to a spool.

what's the difference between the true trac and detroit locker? Also spool is lighter and cheaper $$.
