I was in the same boat about a month ago. You need the back drive linkage assembly. National Parts Depot had a set for me for about $120. The kit includes 2 rods and a leverage bracket to be mounted right next to the exhaust under the driver's seat (right on the I-beam). The 2 rods connect to that bracket. One from steering column ear to the bracket and the other rod from the bracket to the tranny. Mine is an M20, so be specific as to which tranny you have before you purchase. I was able to get one for the M20 Muncie 4 speed fortunately. You will have to do quite a bit of bending of the rod from the bracket to the tranny to make sure everything engages/disengages correctly. I hope this helps. If you need any other assistance, let me know. I feel like I mastered this one this summer! LOL!! Tom.

Steve,
The other problem is that the backdrive will hit most headers. If you have them, you had better make sure it will fit befor eyou spend money on it. My 71 has been without the backdrive since it was about a year old due to the Hooker headers. Twisting the column to turn off the backup lights sort of becomes second nature after a while :)

I have headers on my 70 Chevelle SS and wound up removing about 1/2 inch of the bracket and drilling a new hole for the rod to go in. Works well now and clears the headers when I shift into reverse. Just a thought. You can make it work if the headers are not too big. I was insistent on doing it to pass my NYS inspection. That's just me. Good luck! Tom.

Hi all. Well I do not have headers so that extra work I wont need to do. I see that the EAR has been removed off the steering colume on the outside, looks like I will be replacing that. Also, does anyone know how to hook up a new nutural safty switch???
