OK boys, this is another chapter in my gearhead education. I just finished breaking in my new UD cam 2 weeks ago, everything went great.Tonight I thought I would adjust timing and see where my mech and vacuum advance were. With vacuum line to dist plugged and initial set at 12 this is what i got
1000rpm 13
1500 16
2000 20
no further timng advance on rpm increase.
I then attached vacuum line to distributor
1000rpm 23
1500 35
2000 40
No further increase with higher rpm
Please help

Sorry for the lack of info. Its a 355ci,9.75-1 comp, vortec heads, UD CAM 276H10, 221/221 @.050, 454/454 lift, 110 lsa, 104 icl. Stock hei distributor. I set the timing at 12 degrees initial with the vacuum line capped off. From my readings it appears I am getting about 8 degrees of mech. advance , right? With 12 degrees initial and a total of 20 at 2000 rpm. With the vacuum line connected I have a total of 40 degrees at 2000 rpm

Has anyone put an advance kit in the HEI? Some of the cheap ones don't work at all. Also make sure the advance tower isn't sticking. They are really prone to doing it.

Good call Mike.
blumont-I think you need to get yourself a different set of springs, weights, and an advance cam from a stock distributor.
As it stands there is no way you are going to get to a total of 34-38 degrees(no vacuum advance) with out having your initial set at 28.

I was thinking you may have the cheapo recurve kit if you had an HEI. The one in my truck sticks sometimes at mid advance. I have to pull the shaft out of the housing and clean the baked on oil out of the advance plate.
i have the same numbers on my 383,and it works!
