: spider bite

I was just out in the garage and got bit by a spider, he was about average size, on the underside of my forearm. I told the bride and she said to put some baking soda on it.

My skin is real sensitive, if I itch something a few times I will break out a little bit. This bite was really itching, went down put a little water in a saucer then put some baking soda in it, kind of thick, stuck that on the bite, in a matter of minutes the itch was gone, that was about an hour ago, still don't even notice it.

Anyway, this probably might not make a difference if its poisinous, but it might be worth a try for a bite, or any kind of mosquito bite or whatever.

I don't know what kind of spider it was, its a flat spot right now, but two blocks from me a couple of months ago a guy I know got bit by a brown recluse, he had to go to the hospital, it was really getting bad.

He put his welding glove on, felt a little pick like a piece of metal got him.

I have a red spot about the size of a half dollar on my arm, but I can't feel it.

Just wanted to pass this on.

Don't mess with those brown recluse types. I spend 3 1/2 days in the VA hospital here a lot of years ago with a bite on my left hand, hung up in a sling, while the doctors pumped antibiotics (or whatever it was) into me through an IV in my right hand. Not much fun.

But, I did get to have an intern cut out a chunk of dead skin about the size of a nickel when it was all done - with no anesthesia. If I never hurt that much again it'll be too son...

Rob-
Probably not what you want to hear, but I think you should go to a redi-med or the ER. If it's only been 4 hours and it's the size of a Kennedy Half, you might be best off to go NOW.
Scrape the spot up and take it with you as well.

That is right! Do not mess around with spider bites. They can seem like nothing at first and then half a day or a day later it will come on very fast! Then you have a serious problem for sure. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! (geesh! I sound like grandma now!)

I have to agree with Dave.
Some people don't have a problem others have very serious reactions. Your little baking soda trick may have drawn the poison out but you need to watch things very carefully.

Rob, I have a buddy that lives in Appleton and he got bit by a brown recluse this summer right on the side of his face on the left cheek. His whole side of the face swelled up and turned purple then started rotting away. He was bitten about 4 in the morning while out for a smoke, and went to the hospital in the early am after his wife saw it. I would not mess around with a spider bite that is showing any signs after 4 hours. Go get it checked out!!

Thanks for the concerns guys, :thumbsup:it looks the redness is going away, must of been a common spider, whatever that is. Unless its my old age, and the skin is dead about 8 layers down, and no circulation left.:)

That looks like a common 4 eyed toad-spider, the illigitimate offspring of a male toad and female garden spider. Harmless except for peeing all over you if touched.:D

A good idea is to draw a ring around the red area of the bite, if you notice a significant growth tomorrow morning, its best to get straight to the ER.

Bite update.

It got a little red in the area of the bite a couple times today, and it would itch, same thing about 15 minutes ago, I put some more damp baking soda on it, it quit itching almost immediately, and looking at it right now, the redness is gone. How about that baking soda, huh.
