I am posting this for my DAD. He is thinking about a cam change and wanted some advice. The main thing is that he doesn't want to change pistons/heads.Everything else is far game.He is thinking about the Comp 292 solid(I think thats it, One step bigger than what he has now,). He was also wondering if there is a Xtreme energy solid flat tappet cams for a big block. Any other cam recomendations would also be helpfull. At one time I think Harold said somthing about a 288 cam,???, not real sure though.
The car is an 84 Z 28,
>454 bored 0.060 over "468"
>TRW pistons. dome
>11 to 1 with 69' oval port heads-ported,2.19,1.88 valves
>Eldebrock RPM performer intake,1'inch open spacer,
>850 Holley Double Pumper,
>Comp Cams 282s, 236 @.50, 561 lift I/E lashed tight 0.022
>Roller rockers,
Hooker headers
>Msd ingnition 6Al,
Turbo 350 trans cheetah valve body
>3000 Stall, 10 in.
>4.11 gears
>28*10.5 slicks 12 lbs
>3000 lbs car, strip only
>84 Z 28 Camaro

Best pass so far is
60ft: 1.41
1/8: 6.69 @ 103.3
1/4: 10.50 @ 128.8
The car is running out of gear before the end of the track, going through at around 6300-6500. He just bought some 29*10 mickey thompson slicks. So that might fix the running out of gear problem. He said he didn't mind changing gears, and also has a Victor intake oval port, that can be used.

Z, the cam I use is bigger than the 282S at .050 and .200, about as big as the 292S at .200. Harold's Lunati 402A3 grind.(similar to Comps 280S in the marine line) But the one for your dad would be Harold's "favorite bracket cam" the 402A6, the old 288/296 UD grind.

Z,

You need to check to see how much clearance you actually have.
Turn to #1 on TDC. Take off it's rockers, and if possible, also the valve springs. Measure to see how far the intake, and the exhaust, will move from the seat to hitting the piston.
This information will let me determine exactly what cam will fit in without piston problems. Your car as set up could run the 288/296F7, but it is very close on clearance. The 288/296F10 works very good, and has more room.
What sort of fuel pump do you have? These cams need good pumps and 1/2" lline, from tank to carb...

Holley blue pump, 1/2 " line to carb. I will get with my dad on the piston to valve clearence. He is running a set of semi closed chamber heads, that have been opened up some to unshroud the valves. What are the specs 288/296F7, and what are the specs on the 288/296F10?

The converter is a 10" TCI, the one they sell in Summit for about 360$, it only foot breaks to about 2000 RPM. It has no anti balloon plates.
Does this converter seem tight for 288/296F10-(I found the specs). He has been thinking about going to a bigger converter, Like a BTE 9.5" or a BTE 10" which come with anti balloon plates(Possibility of NO2 in the future). Both of the above converters are looser than the TCI 10" that we have in his car. What are your thoughts, Suggestions. About how much is the cam, Cam and springs, and lifters?

Z,

The specs are as follows:
Both cams are 288/296 at .020, 255/263 at .050, 166/173 at .200. and .612"/.630" gross valve lift.
288/296F7--IVO 42° BTDC IVC 66° ABDC EVO 80° BBDC
EVC 36° ATDC.
288/295F10-IVO 39° BTDC IVC 69° ABDC EVO 83° BBDC
EVC 33° ATDC.
The F7 is usable with a 3000 SS converter, I have done so for 20 years. It is MUCH faster with a 4000-4500 SS converter.
The F10 works fine with a 3000 SS converter, and is much better driving in traffic, vrs the F7 with a 4500 SS.
However, your 1 Holley Blue pump is inadequate. You need to get another Blue pump, and mount the 2 side-by-side at the tank, use nothing but 1/2" #8 fuel line. Put the 2 pumps into a Y-block and 1/2" line, up to the front. There have another Y-block, and mount your 2 regulators on the exits of the Y-block. Let 1 regulator feed the front bowl and the other feed the rear bowl. If you want a fuel pressure gauge, hook the 2 unused regualtor exits together and T off of that line for your fuel pressure gauge.
I have used this system for over 23 years, and it will feed a 800-HP 468 roller-cam engine. One Holley Blue will not feed these solid lifter cams.
I think of the F10 as a low-11 cam, the F7 as a low-11s, high-10s cam.
I had rather drive the F10 on the street....

BTW, the cam is about $165, either one. I'll have to price the lifters/springs tomorrow.....
