I need to get the cam ordered to proceed with my buildup. I would greatly appreciate your help in selecting a cam for my drag car. I hope to run mid to low 10’s while limiting the RPM to 7500.

First the car info:
1967 Chevelle 3400# with driver
460C.I. BBC 4 bolt mains ARP fasteners throughout
Steel crank Chevy steel "dot" rods 7/16" bolts
Marlin cast iron heads with rectangular ports 320cc 2.300 intake & 1.880 exhaust Valves
lightly ported ( basically cleaned up )
Erson cast alum roller rockers 1.7:1 ratio, 3/8" push rods, Moroso stud girdle

The pistons are Manley .030 454 with stock length rods ( 6.135 ) and 4.000 stroke and the compression is 13:1 w/ 114 cc cylinder heads. Merlin heads are 119CC so actual compression will be more like 12.8:1 The dome volume is 49cc.

Eldenbrock Victor Single plan intake w/ a 1050 Dominator Carb
Lemons headers 2 1/8th inch
Will run a throttle stop to run super street 10.9 index ( once I get there !! )
turbo 400 trans w/ trans brake , TCI reverse pattern
Torque converter Custom by Mike Munsinger stall to be determined following cam selection I'm guessing 4500 to 5000
12 bolt rear diff. w/ spool and 4.56 gears coil spring w/ air bags Morrison control bars
10 x 29 slicks
I've been running cams on my DDD and have narrowed it down to Lunati cams,

Roller 502A6LUN
Dur @ .050" 259/267
Lift 0.731/0.731

Lunati Roller 50204
Dur @ .050" 269/276
Lift 0.685/0.692

Lunati Roller 50222
Dur @ .050" 276/284
Lift 0.722/0.722

With this information could you make a cam recommendation? Also could you suggest the install advance for the cam.

TWC,

Any of the 3 will get the job done. The latter 2 are Lunati 'Legacy' cams, good ol' boys they have had for years, and they have satisfied customers for over 15 to 20 years.
I am partial to the 1st cam, as it is one of mine. A 4500 SS converter and your 4.56 should put you solidly into the 10s. I have other cars like yours running that fast. You will definitely need a good fuel system with that cam, as it has 'Cubic Torque'. The 2 Lunatis get by with the typical fuel system.
The 502A6 will out-power the 50204 on the top-end, as well as on bottom-end, and have a lot more torque than the 50222.
All the cams are ground 4° advanced. The 502A6 likes 4 to 6 advanced, the Lunatis are happpy with the 4 ground-in.

graemlins/thumbsup.gif Thanks Harold. Is there any advantage to moving up to the 502A7 or A8 with my combo??
Also if I follow the parts suggestions shown on Lunati's web site for springs , rockers etc. is that the best way to go or do you have a better suggestion?? Thanks again.

I'm not a racer, but it seems that most guys find 56's a bit much and tend to gain by dropping to 33s or even 4.11s. As long as the engine likes the lower power band.

we ran a 1965 malibu. 3200 #'s with driver. had a stock bore LS-7 with weisco 13-1 gas ported pistons. all bottom end was stock except for milodon pan. heads were 990 stock with 3 angle valve job. topped with a team G intake with a DaVince 1050 dominater. the carb came off a blower motor and we never tuned it. also had 2" primary headers. ran to a glide with a brake and 5500 B&M converter. car has an old school 12 bolt with old ladder bars that looked like the bolt on lakewoods that were welded on and reinforced. gears were 4.56's and 29" tall by 10" wide hoosiers.we ran a crane solid roller R-258 420-25-8. launched off the brake and shifted at 7200 and went through the traps at 7500. car ran in the 10.4 range. we only put about 15 runs on it and did VERY little tuning. i'm not saying this would be the ideal setup but just our experience. good luck mike
