Very happy to introduce a new member Chuck454 who recently accuired a 15,000 mile LS6 in it's "day 2" original Glory.

He has a thread in restoration Corner looking for an M-22 but wanted to give more exposure to this outstanding find.

Welcome Chuck and awesome car.

I'd be very interested in knowing the car's Assembly Plant of origin and if any original factory markings exist on the firewall or within the engine compartment.

Yep, that car's a clone - I can tell just by looking. You'd best sell it to me at a discounted price to cut your losses. :D

I would say WELCOME!! but it seems out of place now - how about CONGRATS! instead?

Is that an original build sheet?

Hi Tim,
Yes the build sheet and car are very real. I currently have the car at my shop and pulled out buildsheet # 2 from the bottom of the front seat. This car is a very neat car and through quite a bit of detective work on Chuck's part, a lot of the original components taken off the car when it was new have been located and will be reunited with the car where they belong. Car never left the western PA area that it sold new out of and friends of the original owner had the missing components.

Chuck,
Don't restore that car, it looks pretty nice in it's day 2 set-up.
Looks like it is a Baltimore built car.
How about your cowl tag on this, does it also have the "BD" letters?

Congrats on a cool find.:yes::thumbsup:

As you can tell by the threads Chris White is already busy on the restoration of this car. I debated whether to frame off or not but wanted it to look a lot crisper on the underside. Also, while the majority of the paint was original it had a few areas where it had been touched up non-professionally and that didn't look great.

Yep, I would have been extremely tempted to do some major detailing, some minor laquer spot repair of the paint if you could keep it 90% original.

If equipped, leave on the vintage Headers and mags, put it under glass and call it a 15,000 mile day 2 Survivor.

You'll find plenty of frame off LS6's... But how many 15,000 mile originals with vintage day 2 mods are you going to see?

If they truly are 1970 Vintage Add ons....

It'd be a very Tough call for me.

Congratulations Chuck, sweet looking ride. Nothing wrong with the "Day II" look at all. Mine is set up with a few similar mods as well. That's what we did back then, so why not now? However you approach it, enjoy the car :)

I dont know what day 2 is either, but its nice to see a survivor that looks the way I remember cars looking in the 70s. I suspect day 2 means the original tires and wheels didn't make it past day 2! Awesome car.

Nice car but what the hell is "day 2" ?

LK

As likely suspected by now, "day 2" modifications include Mags (Cragers or Keystones) Headers, Intakes/carbs, some spring spacers in the rear to "jack-up" the car.

Typical modifications many owners would make the "day after" buying the car back in the day.

Jack'en em up an slapen some mags on em! Far

Thanks for all the positive comments on the car. I am hoping to hear some good news tomorrow from another Franklin, Pa local who may hold the key to the missing tranny. If it surfaces I will let everyone know. Will Keep you posted !!!

I know you have a pretty nice Collection going Chuck and you stated you have a couple of them undergoing full restoration.... But I was curious....

A couple of us have mentioned the "day 2" curiosity, and rarity "if you will" of this car in this condition.

Would you mind telling us the thought process and or reasons for the desiscion to Frame off restore it?

It will be a rare Icon either way and obviously a more significant investment being Frame off'ed.

But I can't help but think it has a certain Investment appeal as is...... possibly more so in the future.....

Can you expain your deciding factors in the direction you went?

I would have to think it a tough descision.

Im with Chuck, Original cars are cool but I like the Bling Bling. If my car turnes out like I want, it will be factory, but over restored. Im going glossier on the chassis and most parts. "NO overspray and no thin paint. My goal is the 58k 70 396 for sale as previously posted.
Everyone is different this is just my taste. I began this as an investment car but now who cares Im having fun.

CHUCK454
Sep 20th, 07, 8:20 PM
I debated for a while like I stated earlier. The chassis is showing signs of rust. Not pitted in any way but not the original black finish. I could have it fixed without doing the frame off and the car could be spot touched up paint wise. I would then detail the engine compartment and the car would be fine.

However, I wanted to sink my $$ and all my NOS parts into a car that would retain it's value and I believe this low mileage, 2 build sheet car is the one. Personal choice I guess.

This car is killer!!! And Jacquie, you've seen the car, it was the Red/Black LS6 that was parked with the group of other LS6s, Chuck brought it to the Chicago show. It was its' first time out for showing.

Thanks Mike, I need to learn how to post pics on here as well. This car was indeed at the MCACN show this past november along with the Fathom Blue LS6 convert that I did for Mark Strawder, and the White LS6 coupe that I did some work on for Harry Snow. Anybody who would like pics can email me and I can easily send some out that way.
BTW thanks again to Mike Carlton who last weekend took over watch duty so Mark and I could go out and grab a quick lunch @ the Winternationals in Cocoa Beach. He's a great guy!

I remember the car. Yes...KILLER...describes it perfectly!! As a matter of fact it describes all three of those cars. Chris does spectacular work! Hey Chris...after you have all the LS6's in the world perfected what are you going to do next. Can I make a suggestion...66-67's!!!! :D

Thanks Luis, Those are the 3 that I was referring to. And Jacquie, I have a 67 that I'm going to be starting this spring, if you have any more? You know how to reach me! I love all Chevelles, Camaro's etc. I will have a 69 JL8 Z that belongs to Chuck B at the GM Carlisle show this June.

You don't know how tempting that is Chris! I would love to pass my 67 though your hands. Darn survivors...gotta love it the way it is. It's hard to look at 43 year old paint when you're someone like me that loves "pretty". But knowing you'll tackle 66-67's gives me even more incentive to find that elusive Black/Red 66 I've been hunting for. ;) Can you tell us any more about the 67 you are getting ready to do?

ls6ragtop
Feb 11th, 10, 6:57 PM
Jacquie,
The 67 is a So-Cal rust free car, 2 owner originally Granada Gold with Gold buckets and console, black vinyl roof original drivetrain 396-350 HP with TH 400 and factory air. Car still has the California emissions with smog pump etc. so it's a very busy engine compartment! Nothing is missing except the original dated Holley carb. That might be a little tough but with friends like Jeff Dotterer and Philip Cancilla I'm sure something will pop up. Should be a pretty cool car done.

HI CHUCK. Some trivia to fit in with your LS-6. I am near Pittsburgh, Pa. I just sold a pair of Date coded exhaust manifolds to a buddy that is restoring a " ORANGE " LS-6. It was his brothers Velle. His brother died a year or two ago. This LS-6 is pretty bare bones, His brother used it for racing only. It has less than 30.000 miles.
I am helping with getting it close to correct, With date coded stuff. I got into this because his brother was a chevy guy, The brother doing the resto is a GTO guy. Good Luck and keep the LS-6s alive.

Sounds what I just recently bought out of Calf. ,except for the big block. I'm getting ready to jump into it, because it does need some things redone. Are your plans to leave it the same? I kind of like what it is, but after doing the work, I dont know whether to leave the vinyl roof, and go for a different paint color. ???

Mike,
Thanks for helping out with the picture posting! I really need to learn how to do that.
Terry,
As for now the plan is to keep it original. But as always, I sold it to a gentleman who wants me to restore it and on a car such as this, I always suggest options to the customer as to how to proceed with the resto. This car will be driven, so we have talked about changing over to power disc brakes and a correct for 67 style ralley wheel along with redline radial tires and keep the steel wheels and mag style hubcaps that the car came with if he ever wants to go the full original route along with all the original power drum parts. Other than that, no other options will be added. Nice looking Malibu you have there!
