I noticed my LS5 Chevelle has started crackling out the exhaust at 5200 rpm. It still has the original points ignition. I could run this car to 5700 earlier this summer. Does anyone reccomend removing the points and installing the magnetic type contact system? And if so, which one?
Thanks in advance.

IF YOU RUN THE CORRECT DP112 OR STD/BLUESTREAK = DR2173XP(?) POINTS WITH H/D SPRING YOUR STOCK DIST IS GOOD THORUGH 6,500RPM + & IT WILL BE A CHEAP/QUICK FIX IF POINT BOUNCE IS IN FACT YOUR PROBLEM WHICH IT COULD BE.
Unfortunately most parts stores give you the std duty/low perf points with the lighter spring that can start to float at as low as 4,200-4,500 rpm in some cases esp it they have some miles on them.
I have been running the std h/d spring point in my 396 for yrs and adj dwell (28-30deg/i set to 30 deg) 1x to 2x yrly, takes all of 5 mins.
In the past 30yrs i have owned the car i have been through approx 3-4 sets of points with no misfires or staring /running issues of any kind through up 5,800 rpm with my H/D spring point setup.
But i also run a little hotter stock appearing pertronics 40k volt coil along with spiral core wires & copper/brass contact cap & rotor which all compliment the stock ign with a lot less resistance & a little more umph from the 40k volt coil,it's rock solid dependable for me going on 30yrs .But theres sure nothing wrong at all with upgrading to elec ign but many street perf setups dont need it if you beef up the stock ign a tad like i have.

On our L72 engine a mechanic put some standard points in it. 5200 was like a rev limiter. Went back to the Delco D112P HD points and 6500 was no problem. For the last few years I've used the Accel HD points (not the race set). 6500 is no problem at all. We use the same setup in our L78 car. Scott is right on. I've never had a reason to switch to anything else. I'd like to see dyno proof that anything else works any better on a street engine. Of course going from a worn out points distributor to a nice new electronic unit is going to see positive results.

RatVette has the older Pertronix conversion.
The Crane conversion features a rev limiter.
I had no issues earlier in life with HiPerf Points but a few pals broke down with failing condensers, etc. In fact pal Dennis was selling his (deceased) pal's BBC 67 Vette. Running good up to the night BEFORE potential buyers showed-up....bad condenser

I take it you can run a full 12 volts to the stock distributor when using a Pertronix conversion?

I asked the rep about that issue, because of the resistance wire on a chevelle, he said to run a new wire. I would guess that using ohms law the output voltage of my coil would be higher because of the increased input voltage. I hope my 37 year old coil can handle it.
