: Rebuild a Edel 750cfm or just buy a Holley Street Avenger 670cfm?

Hey Fellas,
I've been told that the new Holley Street Avanger is a really good and reliable carb. Easy to tune and great on mileage. I bought my car with a Edelbrock Performer Series 750cfm carb (on a 350cid). Seems to be a little too much carb for my setup.

Over the past few weeks, I noticed what sounded (and felt) like small backfire coming from the exhaust pipes when I would start and warm the car up. Once or twice during warm up. The car also really didn't drive strong untill the engine got up to temp. Gradually, the pops (or backfires) became more frequent. Popping even after warm up or while driving. Further, I also noticed hesitation when gradually giving the car gas (in park, after the car had been driven some distance).

A couple of days ago, while on the freeway, I heard 2 loud consecutive pops from the exhaust. I looked in the rear view and saw 2 puffs of blackish / grey smoke and I lost power.

A mechanic friend came over. He toyed around with the carb while I sat and started the car occasionally. The car would start at times but would not stay on long. His diagnosis was a sticking float and that the carb was dropping too much gas into the engine.

Thus, brings me to this question... should I:
- Buy the rebuild kit for this carb?

OR

- Go ahead and try that new Holley Street Avanger everyone's been talking about?

Thanks guys!

If you're running that rich, you're probably fouling your plugs, which is causing the popping. If it's just a stuck float I would fix it and keep on driving. That said, I'm not a big fan of Edelbrock's 750 carbs. If the 670 matches your engine's needs better, you may be happier with it. Good luck.
