Maybe some one can help me with a question that my son and me were talking about.
We are building a 67 chevelle super sport and trying to match one I bought in Freemont calif back in 67 this car was ordered by a guy and he got tired of waiting on it ,and bought a mustang ,so I ended up with it .I brought it back to Ar in 67 and out ran the chevelles back here it would turn the quarter in the high 12 seconds and when shifting from 1st to 2nd I have seen it throw cigarettes out of the ash tray and hit the back window.
My question is what kind of rear in did it have 373 r maybe 411 the car would run good on top end also as i have pased my cousin in his 442 at 120 miles a hour with no trouble.
Does 411 gears sound right ? I believe it was a 375 hp car as it had a aluminum intake with dule line holly

I'm certainly no expert on all the factory optional gear choices that were offered for the Chevelle in '67. However, I've hung around enough old timers (including my Dad) to hear many stories. If you're car was running in the 12 second range then it undoubtedly had a 396/375 HP engine as that was the only one that would produce enough power for that ET. The fact that you had pretty good top end was probably due to the fact that the 375hp engine came with a solid flat tappet cam shaft and would turn up the R's no problem. My Dad ordered a '67 396/350 brand new with heater/radio delete, bench seat, M-22 transmission and 4.88 rear gears from Winter Garden Chevrolet in Apopka, Fl. He said that it would float the valves in high gear (350hp engine had a hydraulic camshaft). If I were a betting man I would guess your '67 had at least 4.11 gears, maybe even 4.56 gears. Not sure what tire size you would have been running (stock wheels were 14" as I recall). I'm not sure if 3.73 gears were even an option back in those days. My '66 SS came from the factory with 3.55 gears. I still have the original set in the attic.

In those days you could order pretty much any gear ratio you wanted including 4.88's. Though not too many cars were ordered with that ratio there were some. America was a grand place then and American cars were american. We had it made. Look where the new Camaro's are coming from................ not here.

3.73's were pretty common in those if I remember correctly......good chance thats what you had if it still had steam at 120.

And was it modified? The car that turned me on to this hobby is my old mans 67 ss 396 elky with the 375 horsepower 396, 4 speed, and 3.73's. Without real great hook.....Id be very surprised to see one of these things get out of the 13's in stock form. Low 12's is cookin for one of these cars back then...really cookin. On street tires from that timeframe, youd be lucky to find guys that could get faster than middle 13's with these cars back in the day.

The only other option was a radio and a four speed. This motor would run over 140 MPH with fresh spark plugs. Topped out each gear to see what they had: low gear went 67, second 88, third 117 and fourth hid the speedometer. It would hide that speedo in 1-1 1/2 miles. Real tough on concrete and later put a ZL-1 cam and kit, Edelbrock C-427, Holley three barrel, 4.88 gears band M&H slicks. After it started biting it went 11.58 @ 117.64.

Tod Tod, the lowest you could order from the factory was a 4.56. Anything lower was put in by the dealer.

I REMEMBER WHEN I PUT THE CHEATERS ON IT AND RAN THRU THE GUY AT THE END SMILED AND SAID ITS ROLLING NOW,IT WOULD STILL BURN THE SLICKS IN ALL 4 GEARS BUT JUMPED OFF THE LINE WHERE WITH STREET TIRES IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET ROLLEING

Someone had posted (suggested) that the new Camaro's were not going to be built in this country. I was curious as to where the new Camaro will be built?

Thanks

I bought a neww SS in 1966 with a 360 h.p. 396 and four speed (m-20) w/ 3.73 gears. I drove it to arkansas (bentonville) and raced a friend of mine who had an Impala 396 325h.p. four speed. My car had calif emissions and his did not. That big assed Impala kicked the snot out of my Chevelle. It just out powered the heftier caif smog engine.
