: Monte Carlo / Chevelle oil pan
Old, fat, bald guy Sep 11th, 07, 10:31 PM OK, I have not been able to dig anything up at work about this and every person we ask, we get a different answer........ and I really don't have time to go dust off prints from the storage rooms.
1970-72 Monte shared the same basic underpinnings as the Chevelle, but when putting a BBC into a Monte, do you need the smaller oil pan thats required on the Chevelle?
The fan shroud on the Monte is something like 15 feet long (well, 1.5 to 2 feet) and that makes us believe the front frame was extended to accomodate the design of the front end. The lower fender between the wheelwell and the door is longer also..... but, from the spindle centerline to the cowl is an unknown......
soooooo, is the motor set in the Monte frame with the same engine to crossmember space that the Chevelle has or is the space larger allowing a larger oil pan to fit?
we have the Chevelle here that we can measure, we just don't have a Monte...... who has done this?
I used to mess with the Grand Prix's and GTO's of this era, but with Pontiac, the oil pan was never really an issue
Thanks
JWA Sep 11th, 07, 10:39 PM Any Monte I saw with a BB had the Chevelle pan on it. In looking at pans for sale for the 70-72 Monte, the part number is the same as the chevelle pan (resto and performance type pans).
Old, fat, bald guy Sep 11th, 07, 10:42 PM Thanks Jeff...... when we went to the parts book the oil pan numbers were different for monte / chevelle's of that era (and again, not wanting to go into the storage area to pull the prints..... i might still be there looking  )
we have had a lot of conflicting information so far thats why I came here
novaderrik Sep 11th, 07, 11:52 PM the front suspension crossmember is farther forward on a Monte compared to a Chevelle- that's where they get the longer wheelbase. from the firewall back, their frames are identical. but the engines are in the same place relative to the firewall- which means there is about 6" (or whatever the wheelbase difference is) more room in the Monte for bigger oil pans compared to a Chevelle.
not sure about the 70-72 Montes, but in a 73-77 Monte the engine placement relative to the front suspension creates some header fitment problems around the lower control arm mounts with a big block.
70 502 Sep 12th, 07, 9:25 AM i put a zz502 in my 1970 mc, never had an issue with the oil pan,but front accessories are a different issue.bought a gm serpentine belt system and found out the hard way can't use it on a monte because(as was explained to me) the 4" in wheelbase is from crossmember forward which put steering gear farther forward and would hit the ps pulley if left in normal position.had to modify ps pump mounting to make system work.
is this the old fat bald guy that i spoke to about this system? i am parts mgr at chev dealer and believe you are the person i spoke too a couple of times with questions regarding this system
Bowtie-72 Sep 12th, 07, 12:22 PM Hey kev. "70 502" is right. Remember how the 502 needs a special pan for the Chevelle and in a Monte you don't.
PARTSGUY72 Sep 12th, 07, 3:35 PM thanks old fat bald guy . i am going to contact 70 502

Brian..... did you call on this too? Man, i'm sorry if I can't remember everything I talk to people on, but with so many calls coming in a day at least I (try real hard to) remember the guys from the forum :D

Bowtie-72 Sep 13th, 07, 9:16 AM Nope, haven't called in a while. Not much opportunity with this stuff for me anymore.
