Greetings

I got this link from ChevyTalk A few weeks ago. I have been lurking for a while & notice that there are some HardCore MotorHeads here. So I decided to step into the Garage & bust out a case or 2 of your favorite beverage.

I don't have a Chevelle although its on my list[someday] but I am a MotorHead & have some BBC questions.

Well I picked up a couple more BBC's this weekend. I'm looking for a 454 combo for my 4x4 Blazer. I like my 383, Its a good combo [maybe better heads] but I didn't build it for a truck. I am looking for a torque motor as I don't usually drive over 80 mph but I like to get to that speed VERY quickly. This is what I have to work with.

3 prs heads: #781 oval open 110cc, #215 oval semi-closed 97-101cc [some porting] , #236 peanut 120cc .[I haven't confirmed the CC's on any of the heads yet]

2 cranks: GM #7416 Forged standard, cast 20/20

2 intakes: Edelbrock Performer 2-0 peanut, stock Q-jet large oval.

Pistons- I have a .60 block with -5cc, 2 vr W/dish that I would like to use [Im saving the virgin & .030 blocks I have]. I would get different pistons if needed.

This will go into a 2-bolt block. Im planning on saving the #781 heads for something special perhaps a 496 in the future. Right now my gearing is way off- 3.08 & 33" tires. I plan on going to 4.10 - 4.56 gears in a few months.

I am leaning toward a peanut port combo because it is a 4x4 but I am not limiting myself. All input is welcome.

For a heavy blazewr that will never see the high sode of 5200 rpm the peanut ports would be perfect.

There wil be naysayers but believe me, 400 honest HP and mucho torque is available using these heads with some port work. Nothing fancy, stock size valves on the 454, just clean up the bowls, use the Performer intake, a Q-jet, long tube small diameter headers, spend special attention to the blueprinting of the motor, good cylinder sealing, get the quench right, use a slight dome piston to get compression up to ~9-1.

I would cam it in the ~215@.050 range. LSA of 110

Obtaining the 9-1 compression with the 236 heads without domes would be hard to do but might be possible with some head milling.
The 215's would do it on the flattop pistons and would also work well as is.
So they might be a less expensive option.

The 781s are the way to go more air still great velocity for torque. That 2-0 intake can be opened up to the 781 heads. I did it but lots of grinding. The Closed chamber heads are good with a flat top or small dome piston.

BTW I have a set of .030 Keith Black KB203 pistons with 3/8 rods and wave lock bolts. They have very low miles on them.

I'm with jakeshoe on this one peanut port heads and intake. The torque it will produce is exactly what your looking for. 70 nova peanut port heads and intake stock quad 12.40 @117 nothing but torque! graemlins/waving.gif

Thanks for all the input. I think the way to go would be peanut/dome or #215/flats. The 215 would be cheaper as I already have most of the parts. I think the 781s would be good on a stroker[ later this year]

Stick with the peanut ports in the truck.
I just sold my '86 3/4 4x4 with a 454.
I rebuilt the short block, did a valve job on the heads, used a Holley (Contender?) dual plane, 750
vac., stock exhaust manifolds into 2" true dual exhaust. With a 400 turbo behind it,this thing was awsome, even with 3.55's.Nice and quiet, but would just smoke'em on demand.Oh yeah, it did get
a Crane Energizer R.V. cam also.
