: Time slip analysis, and drag radial advice?
bulb122 Sep 9th, 07, 10:55 AM Yesteday I went to the track, for the first time in a while. Only got 5 runs, ,because I had an embarassing mechanical failure.... it's fixed now though :)
Anybody care to tell me how well my car is working for what it is, and maybe give me some better advice on how to use my new ET Street drag radials?
My 2 good timeslips:
60ft - 2.076
1/8 et - 8.595
1/8 mph - 87.8
1/4 et - 13.140
1/4 mph - 106.58
60ft - 2.004
1/8 et - 8.722
1/8 mph - 88.82
1/4 et - 13.327
1/4 mph - 106.13
I had 20psi in the 275/60R15 ET Street DR's. I did second gear burnouts, after the starter directed me backwards through the water, and then forward out of it. I held it at 5000 rpm, until I saw a smoke roll forward, about a count of 3 or 4. So far, I figured out about a 4000 rpm launch with a quick clutch release (not sidestep....that spins like crazy).
All in all, I was happy, I bettered my previous bests. I'm a little dissapointed in the fact I couldn't get below 2 sec 60ft. Track prep left a lot to be dedsired though....
So, I was wondering.... for my et/mph with a stick shift, where should my 60ft's be? Am I doing a long enouhg burnout? Should I have avoided the water? (I was worried about doing second gear burnouts.... never tried it before) Where should I try the tire pressure? Any other launch tips? Does this combo have a 12.99 in it yet?
cmt454 Sep 9th, 07, 11:09 AM There should be a 12.99 or better in it. FWIW, I run 17PSI in my M/T ET Drag Radials. I have an automatic, I dont know if the same applies with a stick. Track prep may very well have to do with your 60ft. times. I generally only go to the track during an event where they allow "time runs". The track is usually well prepped on these occasions. If I go on a "street night", the track is terrible and its a big waste of my time. If you get your 60ft. times in the 1.8x range that should be worth approx. .4 in ET. JMO of course.
gotago Sep 9th, 07, 11:47 AM I'm in the same boat as you are, can't get below 2.0. I'm running the same tire but have a TKO 600 and 331s. I'm improving my 60' times by dropping my tire pressure to about 16 and do a hard (10 sec) first burnout in 2d gear. The following burnouts aren't as long. I try and launch at about 3500 using the same technique you do. The interesting thing is I get about the same 60' on a well prepped track as I do on TnT nights. At least it consistent.
00WS6TA Sep 9th, 07, 11:58 AM Chris,
I am in the same boat as you in terms of my 60' times. Friday I got my best of 1.930, others were in the 2s as well.
The last run I dropped the air pressure down to about 17 and did a longer burnout, and btw I have the same tires as you (275/60R15 ET ). I guess it's going to take practice, but we'll have fun doing it...right? :)
Good Luck
cmt454 Sep 9th, 07, 12:23 PM :DYou guys just need to get rid of that 3rd pedal! Put a TH400 in there and your on your way to better 60ft times and ET's! :D One less "lever" to operate! Just messin with ya
bulb122 Sep 9th, 07, 1:01 PM Thanks guys. Good to know that I'm running similar 60's to you other manual trans guys. I hope to someday do a little better though. I guess it will take much practice! Even though my 60's didn't improve all that much with the DR's, they are still better.... and once you're moving and hooked up, they don't break loose again (like when you hit 2nd.... :D ) So they were definately an improvement over BFG radial t/a's.
Hehe, there's no way I can eliminate the 3rd pedal yet... :) My goals are reqular 12's with a stick shift, and an N/A 350 based engine, with a carb (no 383). Sooooo close...yet so far away! I think replacing my stone stock smogger heads with shiney new AFR's will do it :D
69-CHVL Sep 9th, 07, 1:07 PM DR's and a stick dont work together so good - so I'm told. Best '60 I was able to muster was a 2.0 withe the BFG 275/50/15. I was down to about 16psi. I think you should go down to 16psi, and work your way up.
I gave up on the BFG DR, I was actually spinning them in 2nd at times. I'm looking for a set ET streets or just a full blow slick at this point.
Bob West Sep 9th, 07, 1:19 PM What Chris said :D I was in the 1.80's with good ole Wal Mart Douglas radials (255/70/15's) a week ago Friday, roll in to it, spin thru second, and still went 11.40-11.50's @ 124+ ;) I'd start at 16psi and go up too!!!

Bob, Bill, Anyone Else,
Man, I love my 4 speed and I can NOT believe I am asking this  I have a Turbo 400 sitting in the garage, I hear they lose some power. With a good stall converter and the 400.....Um....thoughts?

Those are good numbers for a 350 with stock heads! :D
Bob West Sep 9th, 07, 2:16 PM Just about everything I had when I was younger had a 4 speed in it, either to begin with or converted to. After I started making more power and racing more regularly I went automatic. If you ever want to hook with a stick its gonna take considerable suspension tweaking (not that sub 1.40's are easy with an auto) or BIG tires. Less parts breakage with an automatic too. You definately need a good converter.
manveru Sep 9th, 07, 2:38 PM get rid of the drag radials, they won't recover from spinning as well as a slick. with a stick you want a controlled amount of spin off the line so you don't bog the engine down. there are 12's in that combo if you can trim, your 60' down. i've gone 2.1 60' spinning like crazy on a 14.2 and i need to 60' a lot better
aukai Sep 9th, 07, 2:57 PM With the M/T 9"x28-15 slick I was able to get a 1.72 60' 12.000 @114 mph with my BB street car I want to buy a street D/R and see how that does.
