I have a low rise Offenhauser 2x4 manifold and use 2" tall 4 hole spacers with dual Carter 600 cfm carbs on my 9.5:1 compression 355. This setup works great. Can idle through town (with 4.56 gear)or go 12.85 at the strip using a Crane musclecar off road grind solid lifter cam. Haven't touched the carbs since installation in 1997.

did you ever change the jets in them? i already fouled a set of plugs whithin 45 minutes. the engine still wont idle below 1500. is this in the carbs and intake or is the engine still not broke in yet?

I have never made any adjustments other than the idle mixture screws. I ran the same plugs for over 200 quarter mile passes and cleaned them twice. (maybe) I am using an electronic ignition with an MSD6AL box. Not sure how that tunnel ram will work and your cam specs and carb cfm ratings will also have a big affect on idle quality. My setup sounds great but the engine is really mild mannered (about 330 hp according to an ET computer program.)

How is that setup rigged to idle, using the idle circuits of both carbs? What is the timing at idle? Did you set the floats after installation?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

both are edelbrocks, both are new out of the box. both carbs are set up together and are not progressive. idle screw is run off the front carb, back carb idle screw backed off completly.

cant tell what idle timing is because it wont run below 1500. i did check it at 2200 and it is about 25 degress. the guy that curved the distibuter says that should be close enough to get it tuned.

other specs are 454 .030 over 9.8-1 running 91 octane. lunati solid with .588 in .601 ex
dur. 258 in 267 ex

dist. is points type with pertronix ignitor II and has been curved for this engine in this car.

if ya need more info or something else to try just say so

thanks chris

sorry guys all of you can award me with the dumba$$ award of the month. i just went out to play with it some more and found that i still had the vac adv still pluged in graemlins/clonk.gif my timing was so far off.

on my elky i usualy unplug it on the dist and i thought i did the same here but i cant see the dist with the tunnel ram so when i walked over to the pass side i found it still plugged in

anyways got everything working good now the fine tuning begins.

also thanks for the help even though i had a dumba$$ attack

Please note 2slow68's setup isn't a true tunnel-ram, but rather a standard inline 2x4 intake manifold with two, 2" tall, four hole, carb. spacers..

That is IF I'm reading this right??

His plenum volume should be a LOT smaller then yours!! So his should suck much better imho.. Which to me equates to an easier to tune system??

deck6972, I have been running a tunnel ram with various combinations with my BBC for over 12 years now. Street and strip and I will say it is always fun to drive.

I would like to say that the best tool to have when messing with a tunnel ram is a vacum gauge and preferrably one that you can install in the car. It will tell you alot on your tuning direction. This along with reading the spark plugs will get you in the right direction.

Feel free to ask of shoot me a email. Pics of my current setup is my signature block.
