TH350. When I ordered the car in 1970 I was already past the "look at me shift" phase. ;) Besides, driving a stick everyday in NJ traffic gets old REAL fast! (Had a 1969 Chevy van, 3 on the tree, for 20 years...real pain in traffic).

Presently a M-21, eventually either Supercase M22 or the new Muncie 5 Speed.

I can understand the auto's if ET's are your goal, but...whats more fun and needs more cajones to do? Going click...click..click... or powershifting 2nd at 6000rpm with not rev-limeter? I vote for the latter...

Auto in mine, but if it didn't come with a built trans when I got it, I would have gone for a manual. The car is just for fun and the auto takes away from that. A T56 sure would help with the 4.11's too. smile.gif

powerslide in the velle. but as soon as the new engine makes the tranny start to sliiide, then goes in a muncie.

auto in the ZJ (grand cherokee) as well, but again, when that motor goes ( i doubt it will, its got 170k on and still kicking), in goes a 5.7 hemi, and a 6spd.

so im not sure where i am on this, so i dont think im going to vote.

Jerico 4 speed here! And the pro stock debate. A couple of years ago Bob Glidden reintroduced the 5 speed, and the difference between Bobs car and the Lenco was not that big a deal. When the 5 speed cars started using air shifters, the lencos couldn't keep up. Eventually they tossed the lenco and the air shifter. I believe that is the history of manuals in pro stock, and the lenco is hardly an automatic because it uses a clutch and planetary gears.
Now that was said. I believe Bullet Bob Reed is a tad faster than the SSA hemi super stockers. I believe a fairer comparison would be in the super stock catagory between sticks and autos.

Used to have a 700R4 until I blew it up, then I swapped for a TKO 5-speed stick.

The stick is much harder to drive consistently fast, but I could care less because I have way more fun rowing my own gears.

I will admit though, I am tempted by a 4L80E with a steering wheel mounted paddle shifter setup; if I ever blow the TKO up, it would be a tough decision.

Turbo 400 with a Gear Vendors OD and a 700R4 in my wagon. I use a wheelchair so an auto is a must. But if I could drive a stick I probably would at least in the wagon. A 6 speed would be lots of fun. But for now I have a guy that sets up the govenor to shift at 6000 and let her rip. My SB needs a little more revs so we may have to get it adjusted.

Go slush boxes!!!

?? But your username is 4spdrat ?? That is short for 4 speed rat, correct?;)

Right you are!;)

When I first registered on this site, I was working on a basket case 70SS which was a 4spd car, hence my username. I wound up abandoning that project for my current '69 SS, which is a TH400, as was my previous '69 SS 14 years ago. I guess I should change my username sometime, I'll have to talk to Al about that.

Yes:cool: I had 1 in the late 80's when I was a teen, never put it in though. I had it in storage. I went through a hard time and moved. When I went back to get my stuff. the storage was cleaned out. for non payment. I lost alot of other things to depressing to get into.

Chris

I agree only a manual for me! M-21

Besides 10 years from now few, except those with old cars, will be able to drive a stick since 85% + cars sold are automatics!

Auto TH400. A stick is a huge pain to drive in a fast car. You know how fast you are always shifting in a 9 second car!

All depends how fast your car is and how you like to drive.

I was always curious about the switch-the-pitch TH400 transmissions that GM factory built after reading an article about them years ago in Car Craft. Also known as variable pitch stator transmissions, the article featured a company that took this design one step further - Kenne Bell Buick. When I built the 396 for my Beaumont, I started looking into obtaining one. Kenne Bell Buick took their company in a different direction and the focus is on turbochargers now. I thought I hit a dead end, but kept looking on the good old web.
It was only when I read through a thread on a Buick performance forum that I found my answer: Poston Enterprises in El Paso Texas sells complete transmissions as well as conversion kits for 65-67 TH 400's
I bought a conversion kit since my car has the original 67 TH 400, and had my transmission rebuilt/kit installed. Kit consists of a new pump with solenoid, new kickdown switch with second terminal, and of course the HD converter.
I was skeptical until I drove it. If you want to launch like you would with a standard, but have the consistency and driveability of an automatic then this is the ticket. Converters are available in 4000 and 5000 stall speed when the solenoid is engaged ( I power mine up off the brake lights ) and about 1200
when not engaged! Yes that is tighter than stock! No, you dont have to run a tranny cooler for the street! (Stall speeds are based on the 455 Buick engine, so a lower torque engine will yield a lower stall speed)
This was bar none the best money I spent on the drivetrain, and all things considered, one of the cheaper improvements. Driveability is great because you get the best of both worlds.

Well, I've got to say I have the best of both worlds! My 64 Chevelle is a factory 4 speed 327 convertible,my 67 is 327 with a 700R4 thats great cruising in especially with the factiry air- easy on the gas too! I'm hoping to drive this one on part of the Hot Rod Power Magazine Tour on the east coast, but....the one I get the BIGGEST THRILL out of driving is my 69 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed with 4:11 gears! Love all the torque that pushes you back in your seat! I'm so glad I didn't have one as a kid! Probably wouldn't be here now!! I really feel the 4 speeds are more fun to drive as I drive an automatic all week! The summer nights and weekends is when you should just enjoy going through the gears! Thank goodness for country roads too! In traffic yes...Sticks are a pain! Now...if I drove a stick all week...hmmm....maybe I would have 2 automatics and one stick. One benefit to a stick though....my left leg muscles are in shape as is my right arm!!! Gotta love it!

I love driving stick. It's even ok in traffic most times. I hate when it's moving, but just slow enough you can't idle along. My Cobra will go 4mph dragging the brakes, but I've been in traffic that wants to go 3mph and if you leave enough room in front of you, everybody will try and jump in front of you.

For the Chevelle there was never any question that it was going to be manual. It's a toy and there's nothing better then banging gears, spinning tires and getting stupid... :D

It's a Super T10 right now, but someday it'll be an OD box. Tremec or Muncie.

Have both. CTS-v 6speed, and auto in chevelle.
Automatic is for racing consistency only for me. 600+ horse /torque in a big block with a standard is too temptingly dangerous driving around. Heavily modified turbo trannys with stalls for some reason make you drive around town slower than with a 4speed.....dah.....but will certainly get you down the quarter faster and more consistently...priority.

Why is the M22 so good?? The tremec has a low 3.27 1 st gear to get you out of the hole and a .68 overdrive to carry you on the expressways.
Your 4.11 gears become about 2.8's on the open road.
The 5 speed overdrive tranny's have it at both ends.

MANUAL!
Way more fun on the street. Not the ideal choice for drag race competition. Manual takes more skill and money(broken parts).
Take a look at NASCAR, road course racing, or any other racing (other than drag racing). Majority would be manual, as you have more control over the car.
Plus manual is way more manly. LOL
Muscle cars were meant to be manual.

My El Camino has a TKO500. The Chevelle had a 4 speed and I'm trying to decide if it should get a TKO like the El or some other stick. My wife's Mustang has a stick too by the way.

iT TAKES A REAL MAN TO HANDLE A STICK! :noway: :D Automatic, when I'm home relaxing. At work, strictly stick, 18 speed double over-drive, not some wimpy 4, 5 or 6 speed. Oh, a clutch is only for starting and stopping;). (Synchronizers were invented for people that wish they knew how to shift, but don't!!!)
