Hey folks, Been a while since posting but I was wondering about a quieter muffler especially at cruise RPM which with a 700R4, 3.73s and a 27: tire seems to be 2400-2800+ running between 60-85.

It has a pretty warm 400 sb with Dart Pro 1, 215 heads, hyd roller cam, .530 lift with 1.5s. 239-241 or so duration 110 or 112 LSA. Compression is just under 10:1 with a mini dish piston and 64cc heads. 5.7 steel rorz. 750 Holley Dbl pumper on an Edelbrock Air Gap intake with MSD ignition all around billet dist, 6AL box, blaster coil.

Has a Flowmaster=2/12" Exhaust with their American thunder or? 40s? The drone gets old after a while sounds good at idle and when the loud pedal is down hard.

Looking to loose the drone this car is a little more Family car that drag car. All though she is fast enough for now.

So recommend a good for us for cruising.

One trick I've found to cut down on drone is to use two different mufflers. I like the idea of an X-pipe in front so if the mufflers have different back pressure it will be equalized by the X. It seems when running two different mufflers they "cancel each other out", as far as droning. It also often creates a pretty unique sound.

Thats a heck of an idea. Think of the combination of mufflers you can come up with. Cherry Bombs + Flowmasters, Dynomax + Ultraflows, etc etc.

The magnaflows and dynomax ultraflows will be much quieter on cruise as well as better flowing. My dad went from 40 series flowmasters to the dynomax ultra flows on his ZZ430 280Z and it was a world off difference in in cab cruise noise. He was blown away by the difference. Car went from an echo chamber were you had to damn near yell to talk to a nice mellow cruiser but still barked at WOT.

I've got Pypes streetpro's in an 18" case - eliminated the drone at cruise that I had with the Flow's. Nice sound at idle and it gets louder when you get into it - but not while just cruising.

IF you go to Pype's site, my soundclip is on there, I'm the 70 SS.

All the ones listed are usually pretty quiet.I know the Hooker maximum flows are extremely quiet if you get the long case mufflers.

I found a straight section of pipe after the h pipe to add to flow thru glass packs, they serve as resonators.

22" long hooker maxflow mufflers! Extreemly quiet but didn't hurt my ET/mph at all. Well worth the money and damn quiet! 2:thumbsup::thumbsup:up. My 355 with blower doesn't know the difference between those and 40 series flows.

My 445 SBC put down 569 RWHP (on motor) on the chassis dyno using 3" diameter x 22" long case, straight through design mufflers.

If you want quiet, use a straight through style muffler with as big of a case as you can fit on the car.

I have always loved the sound of the old cherry bombs when you got on them and let off the cackle or what ever you want to call it was interesting.

I have the H-pipe no X and it is the Flowmaster 2 1/2 system.

I have listened to the cars on the pypes site and really like theirs. I'm going to do a pypes 3" on my 489 car.

Magnaflows also seem very popular here. DO they have sound clips on their site.

I have a 3" manderal bent system with Walker Ultra Flows. No "H" or "X" pipe and no tail pipes, just dumps under the axle. My cruise rpm is around 2000-2300 rpm and these muffler are fairly quite. Get on the throttle and tey are LOUD. A good compromise for my needs.

I have Hooker Aero Chambers, no drone what so ever but a nice deep rumble. I get a lot of compliments on the sound actually.

3" on a 489 is going to be pretty loud no matter how you cut it. Key is to get rid of the cruising drone, lots of great suggestions so far I think.

Personally, I was also thinking about some cherry bombs before the pipes reach the bumper, or maybe even before my main mufflers. I'll also soon have a 489, but don't necessarily want all the attention that noise will bring.

Sums it up succinctly. 22" cases on A bodies. Offset/offset if you're running tails.

I dont know what "turbo" means. As above, 22" case , straight through design. Made by a number of manufactuers, users choice. I liked Magnaflow, but I think they're all stainless now and quite spendy. I'd go Walker aluminized with ss wool insides.

Gene, you and I are part of an elite group who run 22" x 3" Magnaflows, and enjoy quiet operation and no power loss. They mock, but do not understand.

PS - those SOB's are heavy!!!!

i love the sound of the magnaflows at idle but i just can't get into that crappy glass pack sound when you climb on it and when you let off of it. hate that cackle. also hate the drone from the flowmasters but prefer the sound at WOT alot better than the glass pack sound. i think i might be going back to the old Walker Super Turbos, they seem fairly quiet with little drone and no cackling when you lift the throttle.
