For the record, I have done extensive searches, dating back to 1999 pertaining to this request. Some excellent posts, thanks Wes Vann http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html and John Muha for pages of insightful reading.

Here's my situation in a nutshell.

* 1968 Chevelle with original harness
* donor engine, internal reg'd alternator and relative harness from '74 Caprice
* trunk mounted battery, 1gage wire to starter, 1gage ground at rear frame
* Holley Blue electric pump mounted under trunk
* oil pressure cutout switch on firewall
* a handful of Bosch 30 amp relays

I more, or less, get it as far as wiring any one of these things up, but is there a more efficient way to do it all at once, other than towing it to the wiring shop, paying the dough and not really learning it ?

I just don't want to be sending unneccessary amounts of wire forwards and backwards if I can just use some common grouping, locating and minimizing.

A couple of questions...that is a couple more questions :D. Best location for fuel pump relay ? My new alternator has a pole marked battery and a two prong plug with r and f indicated. Can I use the 10 ga. or so wire from my battery to fuel pump relay and just carry it on to the alternator, or do I need to run a separate wire?

Thanks for taking the time to read this epic, answers to any of the many questions will be appreciated. I read pictures really well, so if you have a diagram with the similar setup, that would really be a big help.

Big thanks.
John

* trunk mounted battery, 1gage wire to starter, 1gage ground at rear frameStreet/strip car? Do you race? Do you have a cut off switch in the back? Do you have to be NHRA legal? What will work and what is legal are two different things.

I just don't want to be sending unnecessary amounts of wire forwards and backwards if I can just use some common grouping, locating and minimizing. Like skinning a cat, there is more than one way to wire a fuel pump (or anything else for that matter) Just depends on what you want or need. Relays can be controlled by the power, the ground, or a combination of the two on the coil side. Is you oil pressure switch normally open or normally closed?

Right near the fuel pump.

My new alternator has a pole marked battery and a two prong plug with r and f indicated.
Are you sure it is internally regulated? Do you know how to tell the difference? If not, see this post w/pics http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105661

What amp alternator? Generally, you need at least a 8g and larger amp alternators need a 6g or bigger. Using to small of a wire will result in voltage drop and poor battery charging.

Thanks for the reply, Greg.

* car is a Sunday driver/racer
* will be installing a cutoff switch to be legal
* will install relay right near fuel pump
* By gum, according to your photo, it is an externally reg'd alternator ! So that makes that an easy install. I just assumed it was internal :(
* it is a stock '74 alternator...don't know what the amp'g would be.
* is 8g enough to run from the rear mount battery to alt ?

Thanks again for your input.

PS, that is one sick car you've got there ! Must be a riot to drive.

* will be installing a cutoff switch to be legal
To be legal, when the switch is turned off, the engine must stop and entire cars power must be shut off. This is not a problem on a race only car that doesn't have a alternator. For cars with a alternator, the alternator output wire must be connected to the battery side of the cutoff switch or a alternator shut down relay must used.

I just assumed it was internal :(If you want to convert to a internally regulated alternator (they don't have some of the issues that externally regulated one have) there is plenty of info here on how to do it.

i believe the biggest amp alt was 63 so 8g will be fine.
