my 396 has been decked is there any other place on the block i can check the vin? its a baltimore built car if this helps

Down close to the oil filter. Normally hard to see with engine in car but if you have a lift..... Not on all years/plants but some did have it stamped there.

I believe the vin is sometimes stamped vertically by the oil filter also.

So far, only Atlanta & KC big blocks have been reported with the CON VIN by the oil filter, all others have been on the engine pad. There is no other location for the engine ID information. :sad:

o well...when i change the oil tomorrow i'll just look for the heck of it...would like to find the buildsheet too but no luck...i should get the head numbers off it too...they're rectangular port heads..maybe 375hp heads or 454 heads?

I had to wire wheel layers of paint off to see mine. The numbers are very small too. I had to take the block out to really see what it said. The location was above the filter and a Kansas City built car.

Just for those lurkers out there.. please, those of you posting your replies.. let everyone know what year car?? It matters.

For what it's worth, my '70 Baltimore built 402 does not have a VIN stamped by the oil filter, only on the deck.

My well documented Kan built 69 SS396 has the VIN by the oil filter. I bought the car in 1988 and at that time less was known about these details. I almost walked away from the purchase then remembered that some cars had the VIN by the oil filter. This site is invaluable since prices keep escalating.

I bought a 70 El Camino SS that is a Van Nuys-built car and it has the CON VIN near the oil filter.
