: torque converter?
70cartruck Feb 25th, 05, 6:18 PM i wanted to know some good mild torque converters for a turbo 350. I was looking at the TCI Saturday Night Special. Something with 2200-2300 stall. I want to use a lareger cam.
Also how is the install on these? I have a 1970 elcamino with a sb 350, any tips, length of time, any special tools required?
thanx

thanx
mc71454 Feb 25th, 05, 8:50 PM Use a BM Holeshot 2400. Just have to remove the transmission or lower it enough to slide out the existing converter. No special tools but a buddy to help muscle the trans would be very advantageous, boy I hate swapping transmissions.
On the cam....nobody can really comment on that without knowing all the specifics of your whole combination.
Generally when you go with a "bigger" cam, the car will slow down without the rest of the complimentary changes that it will like to "work" with as part of the whole package.
70cartruck Feb 25th, 05, 9:00 PM the larger cam i wanted to use was a 268/276 lunati voodoo(227/233 dur. 489/504 lift). I was told that the 262/268 (219/227 dur. 468/489 lift) would do great, but that the 268/276 would be better and have a rougher idle, which would sound better.i have a sb350 with edel.carb and performer rpm intake, long tubes, auburn diff w/3.55 gears. Is it worth the headache of putting in the stall conv. for the more performance and sound, or will the 262/268 sound good enough and give me enough power. (the car is a daily driver in good weather, goes to street legal drags, and some street racing)
mc71454 Feb 25th, 05, 9:19 PM The torque Converter makes a huge difference in 1/4 mile performance. The wrong converter versus the right converter can slow you down 1/2 a second or more easily. This is Fact not hearsay.
A rougher idle can mean less bottom end without the properly matched components. Your static compression ratio is a major factor in your cam selection at this point. if you are at 8.5:1 go for for the smaller cam, your car will be quicker...
With the longer duration 268/276 you MUST go for the 2400 converter and the 3000 would be best for strip performance and not bad on the street just get a decent trans cooler.
I am sure some SB gurus will chime in here soon.
70cartruck Feb 25th, 05, 9:45 PM i have the stock heads and bottom end. the motor is all original, 9 to 1 comp.
mc71454 Feb 25th, 05, 10:20 PM If you have the stock cam in there now, go with the smaller cam for sure. You will be quicker.
One rule of thumb:
"For a heavy street car with occasional strip use that runs on pump gas, go the cam you think will get you that HP edge or the one you are drooling over, and then actually install the one "down" from that one in the catalog. In just about every case you will be quicker"
of Course this does not apply when you are building a specific combo designed to run within a certain ET range. My combo for instance is a 60/40 strip/street setup, detuned for use on marginal track conditions but driven to and from the track and I drive my kids around in it. I will be modifying it to 80/20 strip/street for average to better track conditions by changing a few parts of the tuneup and the gearing. The streetability is going to decrease. My cam is small for 540 cubic Inches by most recommendations, but it is an intentional part of the design to help have better street manners and not be a pig in the lower RPM ranges.
70cartruck Feb 26th, 05, 11:47 AM with that said would you go with the comp extreme energy 268 cam (224/230 dur.50 477/480 lift lsa110) or the lunati voodoo 262/268 cam (219/227 dur.50 468/489 lift lsa 112/108)???
thanx
70cartruck Feb 26th, 05, 12:35 PM any recomindations? I want to make sure i get the right cam the first time.
thanx
mc71454 Feb 26th, 05, 1:18 PM I would go for the 262/268 voodoo cam, a BM holeshot 3000 converter and 108 LSA.
You'll really feel it kick in at 3000, but it will idle a rough for a decent rump and be decent for easy cruising stop light to stop light.
