Oh, THOSE things. Personally, I've never found the reproduction upper brackets to even come close to fitting. The lower one I used needed to be massaged as well to even be useful. I sent the upper one back and made my own. I have had similar problems with reproduction alternator brackets.

I would suggest strongly trying to find a good used original GM bracket if you want it to fit and work without any trouble. Keep in mind that the brackets are specific and different depending on if you are running a short or long water pump. If you have replaced the exhaust manifolds with headers, you will also need to make some alterations to a stock-style bracket to get it to work.

Were did you bought your bracket? Did you bought new brackets to the alternator to?
Since you got a 65 you know how tight it is to the rad with BB and the early years you just have to go with a short pump to get enough room, at least what I found out. Since I live in Sweden the used market for brackets to short pumps is very limited. I thought the aftermarket ones were pretty good?

Thanks

Well, the reproduction brackets LOOK pretty good, but often the holes for the bolts don't line up correctly. I had to weld up and redrill some holes on the reproduction alternator brackets I had bought. The upper power steering bracket was so far off I sent it back and made my own. If I had to do it over, I would have searched out good used originals. I think the lower power steering bracket most dealers sell is a GM bracket so it will fit okay. I might also suggest using the '68 power steering hoses and pressure lines from the pump to the steering box. The earlier style for 65-67 can be hard to find and are expensive. The '68 style are easier to find. They look different when installed, but provide better hose to belt clearance and are simply easier to install.

You might want to contact True Connections in California. I'll bet they can hook you up with good used original brackets or at least point you toward someone who can. You might also want to contact John Watts at 402-674-3147 (he goes by allyears on these boards, you can send him a private message or e-mail by looking up his profile).

I would agree you need to stick with short water pump pieces when putting a BB in a 64/65. It can be done with a long water pump, but it is much more work to get things to fit.

I originally bought my reproduction brackets from Hinshaws Chevelles, however, the same reproduction brackets are sold by all the dealers. James Hinshaw does put together a nice power steering installation kit which includes the pump, pulleys, brackets, hoses and remote reservoir which I used. I used all the parts but sent back the included upper bracket since it was in no way usable. Everything else worked fine since the kit includes a GM lower bracket and '68 style hoses and pressure lines. I bought the kit intended for a '67 Chevelle so the bracket used to mount the remote reservoir won't work on my '65 without modification, but I knew that when I bought the kit.
