: Camshaft Selection Help
XXX Mar 10th, 04, 10:03 PM I Just got all my parts for my motor except for the cam shaft. Its a
454 Gen 5 Block Std Bore
Forged Steel Crank And Carillo rods.
I have the TRW Forged LW2465 Pistons .215 Domes.
Heads are Gen 5 Req Port Heads 118cc Chambers With 2.19in and 1.88exh Valves,
Comp Cams 924-16 up to .640 lift Valve Springs.
Speed Pro Hyd Roller Lifters, 3/8 Push Rods,
Edelbrock Airgap Manifold with a 850dp Demon. Also Gonna Run 2' headers and 3.5 collectors.
I need Help to find a good Hyd Roller Camshaft, This engine will be a street strip.
The tranny is a Built To hell TH350 With a 2800 Rpm Stall and 3:55 Gears.
Want it to at least idle good enough for street use. Looking to get the most out of this motor...
There has got to be somone out there that can help.
pdq67 Mar 11th, 04, 6:58 AM My problem with your combination is that you want the max. out of it for a street motor but yet went hy-roller??
A hy-roller is kinda limited as to actual hp/rpm output due to the lifters generally being too heavy to rev higher but this can be helped by installing a rev. kit.
Otherwise a good old solid cam does very good for the dollar/hp thing for a street motor, imho!!
Look for one in the 220 to 230 at .050" duration range for midrange torque production which is where it is at for a street motor, again, jmho..

Yea i forgot to mention I do have a rev kit for it, I am not looking to rev the engine past 6200 so i would like a quiet valve Train and not have to maintain valve lash on a mech roller.
UDHarold Mar 11th, 04, 10:45 PM XXX,
I have several hydraulic rollers for the big block. These do not have regular part numbers, but I have made them for a number of years.
284/292--Seat 220/228--.050 .558/.558--Lift
280/288--Seat 228/236--.050 .600/.600--Lift
284/292--Seat 232/240--.050 .600/.600--Lift
I recommend 112° to 114° LSA. The 114s have the best idle and most vacuum, the 112s pull the hardest in mid-range.
The 284/292 will make about 610 BHP in a 9.5:1 540...... On 87-octane.
My son is running the low-lift 284 in his 1988 Pontiac GTA, for several years now. Completely stock other than an aftermarket chip. I have sold this cam for over 15 years, and it is the most popular 5L Ford hydraulic roller that I make.
I make a lot of the high-lift 284/292s for offshore boats, and that family is very reliable on valve train parts.

Gazzer Mar 12th, 04, 9:30 AM Hi,
In my LS6 454 block, I am running an Isky RR-620, 290/290,.620 lift. This is a solid roller set-up, so you may not entertain it, but I'll tell ya, it sounds awsome at idle, and pulls Real hard in any gear from 2800 to 6400 rpm without any flat spots at all. I highly reccomend this cam for street & strip!

That Isky is the same cam that I'm running in my 454. As Gaz says, this cam makes good power. Mine starts pulling good around 2600-2700 and keeps going to 6500. This cam makes good mid-range power. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I have right at 10:1 cr which I think is the bare minimum for this cam. I think that I could use (and get by with) another .5 to .75 in cr. and still run pump gas.
It does not have real aggressive ramps (for a solid roller) or huge lift numbers so it makes a real nice street cam that is easy on parts.
Hey Gaz, what is the complete setup on your car?
Gazzer Mar 12th, 04, 2:10 PM Darren,
My block is a late model LS6, forged 10.2/1 pistons, Performer RPM aluminum intake and heads,
you know the cam smile.gif Holley 950 HP, Hooker 2" super comps, 3" pipes w/H-pipe back to 3" 40 series Flowmasters and 3" tail pipes dumping nicely just behind the rear wheels. MSD 6AL, Malory performance coil, 150 shot NOS (which I haven't sprayed yet  ) I'm also running a Richnond 5 speed and 3.08 gears. Any more gears and all it will do is fry the tires $$$$$ Gas milage sucks literaly, but we don't have these beasts for that anyway, right ? My engine runs good on premium Chevron pump gas, but it does spitter spatter for a bit after turning the ignition off. Here are some pics of it when I brought it home back in January..

I Just picked up a Hyd Roller Cam Crower Cams talked me into is a In.551 Exh.578 Advertised Duration is In.286 And exh.300 and LBA is 112 I didint want to go to radical where everyone in the mcdonalds drive through will hate me..LOL This cam will work for now till I want more like usual.
71454Chevelle Mar 12th, 04, 8:12 PM Hey Gaz, thats one real sharp '69 . graemlins/thumbsup.gif  One of these days I'm going to have to get a digital camera and post some pictures of mine.
Your combo sounds VERY similar to my setup. A .030" over 454, 10:1cr, ported 049 oval port heads (2.19 & 1.88), Isky roller cam, RPM AirGap, 950HP, Hooker 2" headers with 4-2-1 Pulse collectors, Dr Gas X-pipe with Ultraflos, a Super T-10 4 spd (2.64 1st gear) and a 4.30 gear. Oh ya a 125HP NOS system for a little extra fun. ;)
I recently sent my cam back to Isky to have the exhaust lobes reground to a 290 deg / 252 deg @.050 / .646" lift. I think the fact that it is now a dual pattern cam will work a little better when using the NOS.
I have not had this setup to the track but I'm hoping for mid 11's @ 120mph+ (using some 28x12.5 ET Streets) on the motor and maybe some 10's with a little nitrous. graemlins/hurray.gif

Can't wait to see how that car runs!
Gazzer Mar 12th, 04, 11:37 PM Darren,
Ya, post some pics when you get the opportunity. I haven't had my car to the track yet either, but I was talking to the guy that just did my exhaust, he's been at the drag racing business since 1970 and his opinion was that if I used my Nos, I'd most likely be kicked off the track till I installed a cage. Well, that aint gonna happen cause, first, my chevelle is not going to become a full time track car, however, I do want to see what it will do. On paper it should do low 12's without the NOS without a problem, and well into the mid to low 11's with.
It does indeed sound like we are running very similar, Keep us posted as to how you do, and we'll do the same.
Cheers,
Gaz
71454Chevelle Mar 13th, 04, 5:21 AM I don't plan to race much but I would like to get out a couple of times this year. With my job, 3 kids in soccer and a wife that works nights, I really don't have the time to get seriously into racing on a regular basis.
I am not planning on putting a cage in mine either but there is a IHRA track that is only about 90 miles from me. I believe that IHRA rules say you don't need a cage until 11.49 which would be perfect for me. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
427L88 Mar 13th, 04, 6:43 AM Yes, I just found that out too, 11.49. New goals, eh! I hear you on the family thing. One reason I'm not much into shows anymore. Boys are just at that age where they're bored at them. Night racing imposes less on family time, so I'd like to do that more often. That and a few nostalgic events - where you might actually find a few more clutch artists!
