: Setting Idle on a Dominator

I'm starting from scratch on my idle on the Quickfuel 1050 Dominator. I have a fairly large cam (.715/.714 270/275 @ .050). Powervalve in primary side. Mixture screws 1.5 turns out. I have the progressive linkage so its not 1:1. I set the primary and secondary idle throttle plates exactly the same by making a .008 feeler gage. Question is... rule of thumb, do the transfer slots need to be exposed at idle?? primary and secondary?? should I set both sides evenly or mainly used the primary side to set the idle? I know about using a vacuum gage and rpm to set the idle mixture screws. I'm just looking for a starting point. Thanks for any replys.

Your likely close where you have it now. Just fire it up and set the idle speed, trying to keep front and back the same like you have now. Most "worked" carbs I have seen like a little less than 1.5 turns on the idle screws. Can be anywhere from .75 to 1.5. Then put it in gear and make sure it will still idle. Go from there. Good luck!

What Jay said :)
While I am far from a "carb expert",,
I like to start with the front & rear plates set the same & all four mixture screws set at about 1 turn or at whatever they came at but there are no hard & fast rules here.
Before you do anything bottom all four mixture screws lightly & see where they were set as delivered, these guys are pretty good if you gave them good info.
Write this down so you can get back to it if need be.

Now you can play
If it is idling too fast close both the same amount
The reason I like them all about the same is the IAB's still partly control how you come up on the transition & what the carb does in cruise when you are still partly using the idle circuit & getting into the transition circuit & or intermediate if you have one.

If it ends up liking more front than rear there is nothing wrong with this.
As long as the idle mixture screws are responding you do not have the blades too far open.
I have had them that liked the back barrels set just enough to keep the throttle blade from sticking or damn near closed.
But this is not where I think you want to start.

Remember, you adjust it just like you would a carb with two idle mixture screws,,,
You just have two sets of them now,,,, consider it as two 2bbl carbs ;)

Just a simple carb with more crap to mess with,,,, :D

Thanks again for the replys guys. Mike, I have that LM-1 I purchased from you. I was thinking about using that along with the vacuum gage. What kind of a/f ratio do these big cam Dominator carbed motors like to see at idle?? I know 12.5 to 13.0 to 1 is about right for power which is right where I'm at. You think 14.7 is too lean at idle for a big cam?
