My step dad was just given a 427 tall deck block(#1473478},heads(#14081052),rods&pistons and steel crank. Were curious to know if this would make a good performance motor? Is it any better or more preferred than a standard block?

Truck blocks tend to have heavy cylinder walls, and they all have 4-bolt mains. They generally have the heavier-duty "thumbprint" rods, the strongest of the 3/8 bolt castings. They'll have a forged 3.75 stroke crank, but it's balanced for ultra-heavy pistons. A tall deck distributor is longer than a standard one. Some aftermarket manifolds are machined for a standard 454 distributor, but if you use spacers and a regular big block manifold, you'll most likely want a distributor with a slip-collar. Make your own, or buy one from MSD.

Drop in a 4.25 stroke crank, +.250 aftermarket rods, shave the deck .030-.050 and use (easily available so not expensive as custom) 454 pistons.

Some but not all tall deck blocks have clearance for 4.25 stroke cast right in. The others you have to grind.

Oh, yeah. Be sure it isn't a 366!

Some folks have had problems getting the tall decks under the power booster and A/C box, and headers may/may not be a problem.

Biggest problem with tall decks is that custom headers are needed and you can not run tall valve covers and power brakes.

Alot of guys keep the rod and crank, then toss the rest.

Steve Steve, If know of any getting tossed, drop me a line. I'm interested in another block to start off fresh with.

I just finished building a TD based combo. 4.375 x 4.250. 511 cid. I went with 6.535 rods and used shelf JE pistons for a 4.250 stroke and 6.135 rod. I filled the block up to the bottom of the W/P holes.

I also used Brodix Heads w/ raised ex. ports. The drivers side header fit great, no issues. The pass. side I had to notch the frame in 2 places, wasnt much to that.

This is in a 65 Elky chassis
