: Merlin heads
Anthony Nov 19th, 03, 8:30 PM Was looking through my jegs lastnight and ran across a set of Merlin heads, the add said they were better than the LS6 heads by 50-100 horse. Thinking about buying these heads instead of porting and polishing my current heads. Money would be about the same i believe. Anyone know what heads im talking about? any opinions??
Bob Tiley Nov 19th, 03, 8:44 PM World Products Merlin Oval port heads are a great buy for a street carv in my opinion.
Anthony Nov 19th, 03, 9:19 PM thanks, they sounded like a good deal. anyone else happen to use them?
ejrempel Nov 19th, 03, 10:01 PM How much $ are they ? Canfields are cheap, but the ports might be a tad large for you.
Anthony Nov 19th, 03, 10:09 PM the merlins are 650 complete. Oval port 2.3 1.88 valves. 119cc chambers. havent seen any canfield heads in jegs, might need to check my summitt. the motor im intending to run will be a 402 BB bored 60 over, 248 duration 595 lift. solid. 10.5 to 1 comp. duel tunnel ram 900CFM. I was pretty happy with Desktop dynos estimate, even if its a little high thats plenty of power for me. any thoughts?
ejrempel Nov 19th, 03, 10:37 PM $650 apeice, complete, right? If you are running a 402, I am just guessing the Canfields are going to be a smidge slow on port velocity, but you know, a call to the Canfield factory would help get that answer. Jason_67_Beaumont Nov 19th, 03, 10:49 PM I like the performance the merlins give me. Solid power from idle to 6000. I've never spun it higher than that. Mine were the oval 2.19/1.88 & I did a home port clean up/bowl blend with a die grinder.

supersport6667 Nov 20th, 03, 12:30 AM To U guys running the merlins....... Any problems with header clearance on the merlin ovals due to the .400 raised exhaust ports????? I have a set and have been holding off on using them because the headers on the car now would definately not work raising them almost half an inch. Which headers are U guys running????/
-SS454- Nov 20th, 03, 12:52 PM IMO, I think your engine is gonna lack torque with the small cubes, tunnel ram, and pretty hefty cam. You might be happier with an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and single carb. Unless you just gotta have the look of a tunnel ram and dual carbs stickin out of the hood ;)
As for the heads, a nice price. The 260 cc Iron ovals flow 280/203 cfm @.600 with 2.25/1.88 valves and a 4.25" bore fixture. About 20 cfm more than stock 049 heads. GMs 990 rect "LS6" replacement heads flow 292/204 @.600 with the same 4.25" fixture. So I wouldnt expect a 50-100 hp increase.
Anthony Nov 20th, 03, 6:41 PM Ive actually decided to forget the tunnel ram, dont want to have to worry about rain and stuff. plus ive heard they are hard to keep tunned. was trying to decide which intake manifold to go with now. The merlins seem to be a good fit for me i think.

So do you like them???? I love them. They have some tricky mounting holes that are of different diameter than the stock heads. They outperformed my ported/larger valve 049 heads by at least 3MPH in the 1/4.
