: Need some Help with pinion bearing....
Pro67Chevy Oct 21st, 04, 11:53 PM I've been trying to punch this thing out with a hammer and screw driver for a while tonight with no success. Is there an easier way to get the race out of the housing?

Thanks.

Jp-15 Oct 21st, 04, 11:59 PM The race inside there? If that's what you are talking, the only way I know how to do it is from the opposite side and a punch and hammer and hit it out.

A screw driver probably will not do the job. Use a long brass punch, at least 1/2" diameter, and a bigger hammer. If you are careful you can use a steel punch, but you dont want to scar up the surface where the race sits. You almost have to use a press to install the new one properly.
Pro67Chevy Oct 22nd, 04, 10:28 AM Will I be able to use my impact wrench on the pinion nut to get the new races to seat properly?
ovelle Oct 22nd, 04, 12:02 PM no!!!you will ruin the new bearing if not done properly.

blumont Oct 22nd, 04, 12:15 PM I was able to drive out the old race with a punch. I set the new race with a seal install tool. Went in great
Pro67Chevy Oct 22nd, 04, 3:35 PM Thanks for the input guys.
And, how did you get the bearing off the pinion?
Jim
blumont Oct 22nd, 04, 3:39 PM You need a hydraulic press to take the old bearing off and install the new.
66rat Oct 23rd, 04, 7:37 AM Use a big brass drift and BFH to knock it out. Here's a tip: put the new race in the freezer for a couple of hours to shrink it, it'll help on the installation. Don't forget to put the shims from the old pinion on the new pinion before you press on the new bearing. If you've never done it before and you're using a crush collar, good luck setting the pinion bearing preload. What a PITA, I prefer the solid spacer with a shim pack, it's a heck of a lot easier.
Pro67Chevy Oct 23rd, 04, 10:00 PM Thanks for the tips I will definitely use them. At this point I am determined to finish this on my own. Is there anyone reading this thread that has gone through this whole process at home? I sure could use some more advice or tips.
Right now I am going off the Richmond Gear installation video. It is not too detailed. I have a dial indicator and magnetic base. I saw a 6-ton Hydraulic press for $70. Will that be enough to take care of my bearing issues?
Is there a trick to measuring pinion depth if you do not have the “special” depth-finding tool?
Thanks for all your help so far.

DZAUTO Oct 23rd, 04, 11:51 PM I have saved MANY old races that I have removed from various things, such as rearends. I have then used the bench grinder to grind down the outside diameter of the old race until it will easily drop in and out of its original location. I use these old races to place against a new race to drive it in place until it is seated. This way, when I drive the new race into place with the old one, the old race doesn't get stuck in the hole.
