: New pics of my '69 Malibu
Derek69SS Sep 1st, 07, 2:34 AM First time posting pics since the install of the 17" Billet Specialties wheels, C5 brakes, and AFX spindles... :hurray:
Scott Gulbranson (owner of www.lateral-g.net ) shot these pics tonight a couple miles out of town from the local cruise-in. They turned out much better than any pics I've taken.

titan396 Sep 1st, 07, 7:19 PM Looks awesome. I asked some ?? the other day about the c5 upgrade, ( which you answered). since you are running that, can you give me your specs. Wheele size and width, yes I know you said 17's. also you say afx spindles, are those the tall ones? also is your car lowered? thx for all the info.
obseSSed Sep 1st, 07, 8:00 PM Very Nice Derek!!
Great looking car you have there. Perfect road to lay a good path.
Dan Orgill Sep 1st, 07, 11:24 PM Looks great Derek. I've never been a proponent of the larger rims, but the look is sure growing on me, especially with a great example like yours. Two thumbs up!
bob_adamsky Sep 2nd, 07, 12:02 AM It gives the car a very clean look. Nice job.
gearheads78 Sep 2nd, 07, 12:54 AM Very nice. Sits perfect!!
jb442 Sep 2nd, 07, 2:02 AM Me = Drool! Nice ride! :D I always wanted a blue '69 Chevelle - Maybe one day.
Rantheman Sep 2nd, 07, 3:24 AM :thumbsup:Beautifull:cool::beers:
BillsCamino Sep 2nd, 07, 8:53 AM Your car looks great Derek!

Derek69SS Sep 2nd, 07, 11:30 AM Thanks for the compliments guys!
Looks awesome. I asked some ?? the other day about the c5 upgrade, ( which you answered). since you are running that, can you give me your specs. Wheele size and width, yes I know you said 17's. also you say afx spindles, are those the tall ones? also is your car lowered? thx for all the info.It is lowered about 3" from stock, 2" from the springs and about 1" drop from the AFX spindles. AFX spindles are forged aluminum designed for Chevelles, Camaros, and Novas but use C5 corvette hubs and all C5 brake parts will bolt right on. I didn't measure, but the caliper sticks out at least 3/4" beyond where the wheel bolts on, which interfered with the back of the spoke on my wheels. :( I had to run 1/2" wheel spacers to clear the calipers, and because of the spacer, I had to press in longer studs, 2-1/2" long. The wheels are only 17x7 front and 17x8 rear, but there's a whole lot more room in both front and rear for wider. I will upgrade to 17x9.5 and 17x11 when I can afford them, but may be a while.
Looks great Derek. I've never been a proponent of the larger rims, but the look is sure growing on me, especially with a great example like yours. Two thumbs up!Thanks, stance and a clean wheel design are IMHO the keys to pulling off the big wheel look... the wrong stance or a "too flashy" wheel can quickly ruin the whole look of the car. I like 17s and 18s, but nothing bigger...
Ricks70ss Sep 2nd, 07, 12:30 PM Derek: I can see you put in a lot of hard work on your car. great job!! Looks great. Thats front row stuff: Hope to see it soon
frankf72malibu Sep 2nd, 07, 12:33 PM Sure, it looks great if you like that kind of thing.
I LIKE THAT KIND OF THING!:D Sweet looking ride Derek.
Frank
CRUZN68 Sep 2nd, 07, 10:47 PM Looks great! Same size wheels I'm running... hoping to go wider in the future too!
CRUZN68 Sep 2nd, 07, 10:48 PM What size tires are you running? I've got 235/45 and 255/50's
Dean Sep 2nd, 07, 10:50 PM Nice work Derek, looks great !
Derek69SS Sep 3rd, 07, 1:09 AM What size tires are you running? I've got 235/45 and 255/50'sMine are 235/45 and 255/45... biggest available Kumho Ecsta MXs that would fit these wheels. :)
daveseitz Sep 3rd, 07, 8:29 AM The car is so low compared to Mikes' now that if he wants it changed to that stance,
YOUR DOING IT NEXT TIME!
pgustavson Sep 3rd, 07, 9:07 AM I don't think those stripes are correct....:D
Other than that:
Sweet ride, dude.
bdss396 Sep 3rd, 07, 9:50 AM That is one beautiful Chevelle! Great job! Great job with the photos. The lighting was great in those shots. Sweet!
69boo307 Sep 4th, 07, 11:49 AM schwing!
1966_L78 Sep 4th, 07, 12:46 PM Looks GREAT...
D Stroud Sep 4th, 07, 12:59 PM Derek, That is absolulty one of the nicest '69s I've seen. The mods are just sublte enough to work perfect on the 69s body lines.
It looks like something that would be right at home blowing off Porshes on the Autobahn.
Congrats buddy! You should be proud of her.
BTW, hows married life treating ya?
Teetoe_Jones Sep 4th, 07, 1:08 PM So, hows the handling with our stuff? Car looks great by the way.
Tyler
tatoodkelt Sep 4th, 07, 1:11 PM Very nice stance! The wheels can definitely make or brake the car. I switched from the ralleys to Corvette mags on my 70 and it looks like a completely different car.
Derek69SS Sep 4th, 07, 1:38 PM It looks like something that would be right at home blowing off Porshes on the Autobahn. The chassis is all dialed in, but I need a lot more horsepower and a taller gear to play with the high-end stuff. ;)
BTW, hows married life treating ya?She's pregnant and moody, but other than that... it's great. :D
So, hows the handling with our stuff? Car looks great by the way.Handling is incredible. Stock bucket seats are now the weak-link in the handling department... can't drive it in too hard when I can't stay behind the wheel. :D
Skier_Bob Sep 4th, 07, 2:15 PM AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Great photo layout with the road, lighting, and how you positionned the car on the road too. I keep looking down the road to make sure nothing is coming, so move that car out of the way now!! :)
PickSS Sep 4th, 07, 2:28 PM I was never a fan of the 1969 chevelle until I saw yours. Great lookin ride :)!
yanniz Sep 4th, 07, 6:28 PM looks great Derek....do you have any issues with header/ground clearance, and what headers are you using?
I have used the AFCO DA coil overs in the front of my '68 with 500lb/8" springs and the headers are kind of low....mostly due to the header design though (Super comps 2" primary...)
pist0lpete Sep 4th, 07, 6:57 PM Looks Great Derek I really like the wheels and the stance of course.

I keep looking down the road to make sure nothing is coming, so move that car out of the way now!! :)I really have to thank Scott (www.lateral-g.net) for shooting the pictures. He knows how to work a camera much better than I do, and this stretch of road is his secret picture spot... we were out there for about 40 minutes and only had to move the car for traffic 3 times. :)
looks great Derek....do you have any issues with header/ground clearance, and what headers are you using?I'm running Hedman 3/4-length "shorty" headers for this reason... My exhaust does hang a little low due to a poor-fitting trans crossmember (I'll be making a new crossmember, so I can tuck an X-pipe up tight in it this winter :) )
Ground clearance at the front crossmember is 4" currently, but once I get the exhaust tucked closer, I'm going to drop it another 1/2".

Thanks Derek! :) That's definitely my favorite spot, I can always get good lighting there. Here are some others that I've shot there, too. Oh, and I'll get that CD burnt and get it to you this week.
I think the photoshopped image of Derek's car looks bitchin.

That's my new background on both my home and work computers. The car being off-centered a bit works perfectly so my desktop icons don't cover up the quarter panel.
1968SS Sep 4th, 07, 10:20 PM Nice Ride!!! Just curious, where did you get the rear view mirrors, they look nice!
Cheers
Steve
Derek69SS Sep 4th, 07, 10:21 PM :secret: Mirrors are from a 95 Buick LeSabre... angle is perfect, just drill holes and mount.
titan396 Sep 6th, 07, 7:38 PM thx for the info. I called billet specialities the other day about the qualifier wheels, and they said the 17's would clear the c5 brakes by about 1/8"
1badss396 Sep 6th, 07, 8:01 PM Derek! Your car looks perfect, a total eye popper their:thumbsup:
So you bringing that car to cbo8? Or staying home to change dipers?:D
Derek69SS Sep 6th, 07, 8:30 PM Derek! Your car looks perfect, a total eye popper their:thumbsup:
So you bringing that car to cbo8? Or staying home to change dipers?:DWe're planning to bring it down... if it's not torn apart again at that time. :D
Hughski Sep 6th, 07, 9:35 PM Hey Derek,
Beautiful car!!!
Do you have any pics from the side? I'd like to get an idea of what to do with my car as far as lowering. I'm thinking of going 17s in front and 18s in the rear and this would help.:beers:
Derek69SS Sep 6th, 07, 10:09 PM I don't have any side pics right now, but I'll look through when I get the CD from Scott (he took nearly 100 pictures from many different angles)
I'll post some up when I get them.
Scotch Sep 10th, 07, 1:29 PM Pics look great Amigo!
I think others can learn from your stance...it's the taller sidewalls (45 and 50 series) that make the wheels look 'right'. The bigger-diameter rims with low-profile sidewalls screw up the traditional musclecar look, but with enough sidewall, the proportions look really good - especially on a lowered car.
I'll have to put Scott to work- the kid can shoot! LOL!!
PS- I drove the wagon for the first time in a couple years over the weekend...it was a painfully-short shakedown cruise, but everything worked and there were no unpleasant suprises! So...next year we'll be putting some miles under our cars...hopefully together a few times!
Nice Work Derek! (and Scott)
~Scotch~
morecubes! Sep 11th, 07, 12:57 AM ahhhhh i have those same rims! i thought i was the only one.. they are some bitchin wheels, i just hope they dont turn into the american racing torque thrust craze
Unionjack 69 Oct 1st, 07, 3:23 PM Simply stunning !
I would love my 69 to look like this. Don't worry if i copy it on my 69 though as i am in the UK so nobody else will see two.
What is the paint code/colour name on your car. Is it a stock colour ?
If you have a full spec on upgrades to your car i would love to see it to give me an idea of what i could do to mine.
Mike
Derek69SS Oct 5th, 07, 8:51 PM Sorry I didn't get back to you guys sooner... haven't been able to get online for much more than a few minutes at a time lately.

I know this isn't quite a side-shot, but it does show the stance very well. :)

Paint & Body was all done as a father/son project while I worked in Dad's body-shop while in High School, finished spring of 2001. The colors are '94-96 Corvette "Dark Cloisonne Metallic", and 90s GM "Arctic White" stripes. The mirrors are from a '95 Buick LeSabre.
Engine & Trans combo is a '95 LT1/4L60e from a Caprice state-patrol car, mostly stock w/ shorty-headers, a mail-order PCM tune, and 3000rpm Edge converter. I used a Speartech harness and Tanks Inc. in-tank fuel pump in the stock gas tank. Rear axle is 12-bolt 4:10 posi.
Brakes & suspension includes AFX spindles and SPC pro-lites up front, and C5 'vette rotors and calipers. The rear is all spherical stuff from wolfe racecraft and I put used LS1 F-body brakes in the rear. Next suspension-mod is SC&C lower A-arms as soon as they're available. Springs and shocks are dirt-track parts... front springs are AFCO 700# 5" x 9.5" with threaded "weight-jacker" adjusters from speedway motors used for adjustable ride-height. Rear springs are Tru-Coil 175# 5.5" x 11" single-pigtails. Shocks are AFCOs for street-stock class.
Tires & Wheels are 235/45 and 255/45 Kumho Ecsta MX's on 17x7 and 17x8 Billet Specialties "Vintec".
Interior is the next project... I'm completely re-doing that this winter. It will be all new stock-appearing and switched to white with some subtle mods, such as white-faced Autometer gages, and Procar Rally seats stitched in stock appearing '69 Chevelle upholstery.
BB_Mike Oct 5th, 07, 9:48 PM NOt sure how I missed this thread. Must've been busy not working on my chevelle.
The car looks really good derek. I love the stance, wheels, and color. Just need to work on the year some and upgrade to one of those newer 70+ models. ;)
Dare I say, CB08!?!?
Derek69SS Oct 5th, 07, 10:06 PM Dare I say, CB08!?!? :cool:Yep, we'll be there with the car and the little guy.
Alan Oct 5th, 07, 10:39 PM Not sure if I posted yet or not, but looks great Derek! I like the new wheel/tire combo and the stance. You said a switch to white interior? I think that'll look sweet. It's fun to watch other people make progress as I make zero progress on my projects ;)
Derek69SS Oct 5th, 07, 10:53 PM You said a switch to white interior? I think that'll look sweet.Yep. :) The interior is black now, so it will be an easy swap. White interior cars had black dash, carpet, console, kick-panels, etc anyway, so all I need to change is the seats, door panels, and armrests.
A white (parchment) interior in a '69 should have a white headliner too, but mine is in perfect shape, and I don't want to mess with changing that. :noway:
MJRIBEIRO Oct 5th, 07, 10:58 PM Derek - looks great. How much did the AFX/C5 set up effect your width? I'm getting scared that I didn't get enough backspace on my wheels and switching to that setup is going to cause my wallet to get lighter.....
Derek69SS Oct 5th, 07, 11:47 PM Track width is supposed to remain the same, but my spoke-to-caliper interference required 1/2" spacers to clear.
MJRIBEIRO Oct 6th, 07, 7:57 AM That would hurt me, giving me only 5" bs. I guess I can mock everything up before installing on the car to see if it hits. My luck it will take a few months to get 2 new wheels.....
MikeMalibu Oct 6th, 07, 8:19 AM Track width is supposed to remain the same, but my spoke-to-caliper interference required 1/2" spacers to clear.
FYI, the Intro Twisted Vista wheel I'm using just clears the AFX/C5 caliper setup without using a spacer. Like you, I had a clearance problem at the spokes with other wheels. I also found that some 17" wheels wouldn't fit over the calipers (without grinding down the cooling fins).
And your right about the handling .... the stock seats are now the limitation. I'm thinking Velcro ;)
