: Canfield VS Jegs cylinder heads?
greg_moreira Dec 7th, 04, 11:55 PM Whats the story on the Jegs heads? Ive heard several times that canfield makes the heads for jegs, and obviously, the canfields are real good contenders, so whats with the jegs heads? They are good bit cheaper and I wonder if its because its a different casting that doesnt flow as well, cheaper components used to put them together, or a combination of both? Id like to hear that they are in fact the same heads, but just cheaper due to the jegs name on them, but I kinda doubt that the case. It would be nice though. Anyways, whether or not they do stack up to a canfield head, how are they overall? If they dont compare to a canfield, than Im sure they dont compare to AFR or brodix, but how do they do against say a dart pro 1 head of similar runner size or a pro topline head for example? Anybody tried em out with good results?
mike1985 Dec 8th, 04, 9:23 AM I think their the same. They have all the EXACT same specs as my Canfields ( 197). BUT, jegs sells the 197 for almost $1200 for the set, call competition motorsports in Oshkosh, WI. and you can get the 197 Canfiels for $1055 shipped to your door. Oh, they call the head a 200.
And the 197 Canfield has a bigger intake valve than the AFR 195 and out flow them on the intake by a little, but trail on the ex. by 3-5 cfm. They are $300 less though and you can get them in 1 week.

greg_moreira Dec 8th, 04, 3:10 PM Thats a good price on the Canfields. Thanks for the info there, its appreciated. It sounds like the canfield would like a dual pattern cam as opposed to the AFR. Im kinda at a loss as to what Im gonna build. Ive got a super clean vega that I plan to refresh the drivetrain for a streetable low 12 or high 11 deal, but I kinda want to pawn it off cause Im in search of a 68-70 el camino, and Id like to do a small block 406 build in it for a streetable car running bout the same times as I mentioned earlier. Either way, Ive been looking at a lot of different cylinder heads out there and trying to get an idea of whats the best buy for the money. Ive always voted for the AFR heads, but if I can get almost the same(or possibly better) for cheaper than the average AFR head, than I think Ill try something else out and see what happens. Thats basically what brought up the initial question. Thanks again.
mike1985 Dec 9th, 04, 10:50 AM If it's a NA app, i would run a straight up cam, if your using a power adder, then a split cam for sure.
hilljack Dec 9th, 04, 11:31 AM Just called CM and the heads are assembled by a local shop, might be using cheaper parts???? That's a screamin deal though graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Silver69Camaro Dec 9th, 04, 1:34 PM I went through this Jegs vs. Canfield vs. AFR quandry a few weeks back.
So, I just ordered my 215cc Canfields for Comp Products the other day. For $1100, I got CNC chambers, roller springs, 2.08 valves, guideplates, blah blah. It's a real good deal.
BUT, for the flow figures for the Canfields, they reflect a bowl blended port, unlike the AFR (which is already done). So you gotta do some work on them to flow like AFRs.
The parts are of good quality, although you can get cheap-o stuff if you want.
greg_moreira Dec 9th, 04, 2:54 PM Hmm, thats true, anybody have any idea what these canfields do right out of the box?
vegadan Dec 9th, 04, 10:51 PM yes i do, i bought the canfields from jegs, and used right out of the box thats when it had a 2.1 intake valve ,in my pro street vega, best i could pull was 11.5s @116 it was a 350 ci kb flat tops stock rods with arp, cast crank ,4 bolt 1 3/4 headers, vic jr 750 dblp and crane mach flat cam it was a 5.18/5.36 lift and i put 1.6 rockers on ,ran a 4:56 /5:13 gear 31" tall tires, and th350 then switched to a gliud with brake
vegadan Dec 9th, 04, 10:53 PM oh ya and the motor spun to 6700 all the time
