Can a 70 non A/c SS dash Be converted to a A/C dash by punching out the blocking plates? I have an A/C car and have never seen a non A/C dash, so I dont know if this conversion is possible. Anyone out there done it? How did it look and how hard was it?

I have a non-A/C car. The block-out plate is merely screwed into place where the vents in-dash are above the environment controls. It says "Cheverolet" in a very nice extened, tracked out font. This part is easy. The hard part would be the under/behind dash ductwork for the A/C. I don't know the specifics of how they attatch or if there need to cut into the dash.

That part's easy too. You'll have to change the under-steering-column cover to the AC-type which has the vent assembly screwed to it. As for the passenger side, there's a vent assembly that mounts to the bottom edge of the dash with 3 (I think) studs. Ths holes should already be in the non-AC dash. It's a super easy conversion as far as the dash is concerned, but I hope you're not converting a non AC car to air. That's a bear. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Good luck!

oh yeah, duh, the side vents are different from AC-non AC cars, at least in 1970. If I rememebr right, the AC cars have side vents with adjustable deflectors (controls the amount of air coming thru vents via a butterfly). Non-AC cars, to the best of my knowledge, didn't have an adjustable feature. I don't think it'd be all that important, though, if you aren't concerned with being totally correct.

If anyone who has done this has a plate they would wish to sell or trade, let me know. I need one of these for my car (1971).

The side vents are the same as a non a/c dash so dont worry about that. Keep in mind the the kick panels are different. On ac cars there is not a vent grill, were as non a/c car there is a vent grill. Junk yard part, not a big deal. I did this on my '70, converted a non a/c car to a/c dash with vintage air. Looks good.

Thanks guys,

This is an A/C car so it sounds like it should be easy. I came across a non A/C dash and was curious if it would work. Turns out, it looked like somebody took the radio out with a wrecking ball.
