i have a 66 chevelle 396 and...having trouble with starter ok so this is my 2nd starter in the last month, the last one kept grinding and broke because i didn't know what to do with the shims they gave me, how do i properly align the starter and how many shims do i need to use on each side???

Shim,s, Are you sure you have the correct starter for what ever flywheel or flex plate you have installed , I'm using a XS power master mini starter, on all my big blocks, and never used shims.
I'm using 168 tooth. on flywheel.
