Starter busted My flexplate that was balanced with the rotating assembly. Got a new one, but was wondering, what about the balance? I guess there ain't much too do about that is there? Try to make the new one match the old one?

Forget about it and move ahead with My life.:D

Is it internal or external balanced? that is the question? make sure you get the right flex plate

If it was balanced correctly, they didn't touch the flexplate, only the crank. The counterweight should be the same on your new flexplate.

Did the balance shop actually CHANGE the flexplate? (If it was a quality job done by people who take pride in their work, the actual balancing was done on the crank counterweights--NOT on the flexplate or damper.)

I have a 454 flexplate on my boat that some hack-shop welded an additional weight to. If I ever change that flexplate, I'll have to have the new one matched to the old one.

When the assembly was balanced, My Machinist asked for the flexplate. So I went and bought a new HD plate ,and gave it to Him.

So what I'm wodering is if all Flexplate's are the same "balance"?

Aren't all 454's external balance?

I would think they did it right, I know that Tim is pretty "detail orientated" with His builds. I'll need to check with Him I guess. I on't know if He'll remember though.

Most people who balance keep file cards of every balance. If he doesn't do that, find another balance guy.

More than likely he will have a policy of either not touching the flexplate, or doing it regularly. Hopefully he didn't touch it and you just need to buy another one just like it.

It has to be checked.

It's no problem matching the old flywheel to the new one. Just ask the shop to run it up for you. Unless yours is to damaged?

You will need to get the shop involved that did the balanced job!

You could also have a new ring gear installed on the old flex plate and reuse it???

Fwiw, I had my thumb rod 496 Detroit balanced w/ an 11" 454 aftermarket stock type f/w and a NOS in the box 454 GM damper and Lunati's installed both and NEVER touched either when they balanced her!!

The reason I went this way is b/c I'm not going to rpm the big grunt Mutha is all...... Doubt if it see's 6,000 rpm three times!!

They are welded ;)

As has been stated, if it was done correctly & the flexplate was not altered you should be able to just bolt another on without issue as flexplates & flywheels are interchanged all the time & are supposed to be reasonably close
But,,,,
Yea, I know,, always a but,, :D
The aftermarket flexplates do vary so it does not hurt to have the new one matched to the old one if possible.

I did get the chance to talk to Tim today. It was balanced on the crank, and He said He would match the new Flexplate to the old one. So I'm gonna try to find one just like it.

The only number I could find on it is 1610341, Wally the shop owner is out on Vacation. He's the guy Who got it, Tim said its a GM #, but called My local dealer, They don't show it.
