My father-in-law and I are restoring/building a '70 Chevelle with a 327 block. I've built motors but never a Chevy and never for a street car. I've mainly done AMCs for rockcrawling and offroading so I'm definitely looking for advice on this build. Here are the specs so far, at least what we have nailed down that relates to the engine build.

'70 Chevelle Malibu, 327 block w/3858180 casting number, M20 trans, 12 bolt w/4.11s. This is going to be a street car, doubtful that it will see any track time so it needs to be reliable (I don't want to be adjusting valves every weekend) but we want it to be a pissed off little motor at the same time. I'd like to get as much as possible out of the block without sacrificing streetability whatever that number may be. So, with that being said, what do you guys recommend? I'm looking for recommendations on just about everything...heads, cam, intake, etc. Also, I'm not 100% sure of the budget right now but about what should we expect to spend to do what I described?

We're pulling the motor in the next week or so and will be talking to a local builder that was recommended to us by another board member. I'd just like to have some ideas in my head beforehand. Thanks

A 327 likes rpm to build power and lacks the low end torque you get with the longer stroke engines that are used more these days. Just keep in mind if you want good street manners in a heavy car you will need to keep the intake runners small and have as much compression as pump gas will tolerate.

I like the vortec heads or even the edelbrock e-tec ones. I built a 327 for my 66 nova and used the e-tec heads along with a roller cam and the car ran 12s at the track along with having great street manners.

If you over cam it you will need some very low gears to make the car have any kind of launch plus the gas milage will be terrible. Just some of my thoughts, it is a great motor but it was even better when you could buy leaded 100 octane pump gas.
