Was tinkering with my Dad's 454 today in his '55. It has a Crane Energizer Hydraulic Flat Tappet cam, somewhere around 533 lift, not sure of duration. Ever since he's had it, it has had good bottom end but once it gets to about 5200 it just stops climbing.... I thought it might be the fuel pump so I put a Holley 110GHP on it. It has 8.5 PSI at idle. Pretty much the same result, big bottom end but just quits climbing around just after 5k..... has good plug wires, GM HEI, idles and runs good all the way around except for this. The cam card says the powerband for the cam is 2500-5500 and valve float at 6500. Am I just used to solid cams or what?

Purs; The cam card will,or should, give the recommended springs. If the springs are stock or fatigued,it will not rev. Steve

I have an oval port 468 with a comp Cam that is supposed to go to 5200 RPM it is flat dead at 4500 RPM and really doesn't do much above 4200. It was put in straight up with the correct springs. It has tons of torque runs super but will not RPM no matter what I do to it(I have tried different intakes carbs etc.)

i had the same problem with with a few cams 228 @ .050 and a 214/224@ .050 come to find out i had some bad lifters......it was like the car hit a rpm wall just wouldnt do nothing i had it floored and that 228 cam would not go above 5600 and the 214 cam wouldnt go about 5000 rpms.......as soon as i changed lifters the rpms cam alive.......for some reason the lash played a roll into the rpm it would take.......the looser the lash the higher the rpm......

I haven't checked the timing, will do that today. It has a Torker intake. Can't talk him into swapping it, it's polished and looks "purdy" :D This is mainly a "Cruiser" but it bothers me that it just flat stops at 5300.... What I really like to do is pull my UD 272/282 solid out of my 408 I just pulled and put it into his 454. I shifted that thing at 6300-6500 and it wanted more, more, more!
