I am in need of finding out the correct head bolt marking for my 66,67,68
cars. I have a few coffee cans full and there seems to be many choices. Some have a crown or raised edge on the head others are rounded, and of course the have there funny little foundry stamp along with the cross haires stamp on the top. What do judges want to see. If these engines were built in tonowanda would'nt the bolt makers be in the same region? Any help from you exacting hair splitters out there? Thank's, Norm.

think www.oldmusclecars.com has the correct bolts for all three years, probably cheaper than paragon which also wouldl be a good supplier for 396 engine parts because the corvette in 65 & 66 used the 396 block.

The 396 was used in the Corvette one year only (1965). The 427 was introduced in 1966 in the Corvette.

The 1966 427 450HP being the most wicked Corvette produced in that era.

Thats all great info........but what in the world does it have to do with bolt head markings? (The point of this thread)

What do judges want to see. Sounds like this is the real question. Depends on what judges I suppose. Basically, AACA judges only want to see if it's a 396. They don't care if numbers are correct or if it has was it's suppose to have (like A.I.R. or A/C), only if the item was available and that it visually looks correct. VP of class judging relayed to me that AACA's judging system is based on authenticity as the way the dealer received the vehicle from the factory. Any feature, option, or accessory shown in the original factory catalog, sales literature or company directives for the model year of the vehicle, will be accepted for judging. However, our system dose not judge by Serial Numbers, Casting Numbers or Cal Tag information. Since we are dealing with every possible manufactured vehicle it is impossible to expect our judges to know and interpret all these nomenclatures.Stands to reason they wouldn't be looking at markings on head bolts either. Of course, if you use studs or 12-pt polished ARP bolts or something like that, they may take notice. :)

Very little to do with Bolt head markings, but The previous postor to mine stated that Paragon Corvette would have the correct bolts because Corvette utilized the 396 engine in 1965 and 1966.

And since this is "Restoration Corner" where being correct counts, I was letting him know that Corvette used the 396 in 65 Only.

Didn't want a future reader of the thread misinformed.

Did you think I was just randomly sputtering off facts like a Chevrolet Rainman or something? :)

I have a picture of my old Bone Stock never touched or rebuilt 1966 396/325hp engine. In the picture you can see some head bolts. If you would like me to send you the picture via email just send me a PM with your email address.
