: $58,000 Chevelle with a luggage rack?

Is that a rare option? If it's a documented option on the build sheet, I guess it's rare?????
But, would YOU put it back on if you spent buKu bucks restoring it?
Does the luggage rack make it more desirable?
Is the rack for hauling slicks to the track?
savage71chevelless Aug 27th, 07, 9:53 PM That is ugly as hell
04S396S Aug 27th, 07, 10:24 PM Looks extremely out of place
Cam Aug 27th, 07, 10:31 PM I agree, the luggage rack doesn't look great :noway:. That car does have quite a few options though, including the Traction Compound Dispenser .
1badss396 Aug 27th, 07, 10:51 PM Why do they always say $100,000 spent on restoration! yet a price of $57,900:clonk:
ak 67SD Aug 27th, 07, 10:58 PM Yikes! ...dont like the rack, i think i would have painted a spare lid to have on hand... it is one very well optioned car though...must have pulled the camper on alternating weekends from the racetrack!hahaha!!

The other $42,100 was spent on all the chrome under the hood! I was told the factory NEVER made a luggage rack (even on Corvettes) and that it was always part of the dealer installed accessories. Traction dispenser IS a cool rare option though.
smittyocat Aug 28th, 07, 12:22 AM wow 4 wheel mudflaps :)
Gazzer Aug 28th, 07, 9:09 AM I don't believe you would find that on the build sheet, that would be a dealer installed option.
Would I put it on a fresh restoration, heck no, nor would I put the hitch on either :clonk:

69396ss Aug 28th, 07, 10:09 AM Is it just me? or is the Chevelle Emblem WAY too high? :)
And since you have to fill some holes now anyway because of the Chevelle emblem......:)
mr 4 speed Aug 28th, 07, 10:18 AM effing comical is all I have to say
mmurphy77 Aug 28th, 07, 10:45 AM I think the build sheet is suspect, and it probably didn't come with half the options is says it did.
Luis Aug 28th, 07, 10:45 AM I saw this car this past April in Carlisle. It failed to sell during the auction. Yes, it has every option you can imagine, (except the trailer hitch). I think it is worth the money, but it will need some money to replace chrome parts back to original. The luggage rack does not look that bad. Challengers had this option back in 1970.
69396ss Aug 28th, 07, 11:10 AM $58,000 for a 325HP Automatic is worth the money?
Can you imagine the effort to get the engine compartment correct?
Extremely labor intensive.
EXTREMELY and you'll spend THOUSANDS
DaleM Aug 28th, 07, 11:25 AM Ad clearly states it is part of the dealer installed accessories and not a factory RPO and is clearly listed as a dealer accessory in GM literature. Lots of uses for it, extra luggage for a family, bicycles, skis, etc. Probably not many would put one on if their intention was to sell the car but then they probably wouldn't put a GM child safety seat or portable handheld spotlight either. The $100K restoration 'cost' looks like it's spread out over 17 years and some appear to be using today's cost. Says it was featured 10 years ago in Chevelle Report so I doubt the car was restored for resale profit.
Looks like someone got obsessed with GM accessories and used as many as possible, maybe just for the bragging rights of having everything. Overboard? Probably. Are all the options on the build sheet? Probably not but how many cars do you know of that add numerous RPO items and dealer accessories that didn't really come with the car? Beaucoup I'd betcha.
Nice car, but as noted, engine compartment would take a bit to return to factory condition if showing the car in a restored class was the buyer's intent. Making a statement at a ski lodge, it'd probably work the way it is. To each their own.

aww..c'mon..I can't turn that K+N lid around and put some 396 Turbo Jet 325 HP decals on it and call it correct? ;) :D
You always tie some slicks to that luggage rack!
forcd ind Aug 28th, 07, 12:41 PM dam, what a waste of a nice luggage rack-lol
its to hold on to after ripping your leg open from the 3' long tailpipes
1966_L78 Aug 28th, 07, 1:10 PM Traction dispenser IS a cool rare option though.
Wasn't the "traction dispenser" only for snow/ice, not for "racing"?

No, it's for not Dent prevention when you beat your fist on the trunk lid after you realize you drilled your holes in the wrong spot for the Chevelle by Chevrolet Trunk Emblem.
BULKSS Aug 28th, 07, 6:49 PM I believe I have seen that car in person. It was about 8 or so years ago at a show in Mass. Was a older couple who owned it then I believe. Story I heard about the car was the guy had collected parts forever for it. He had duplicates and triplacates of everything on the car. From what I was told he had new nos parts that he had painted just in case of any mishaps. He sold some of the parts off to a parts Dealer in Brockton Mass.I wound up getting some (NOS Vac trunk release and a few other small things). The car was nice looking just a little to showboat for me.
