66, I wasn't to crazy with the mallory unilite distibutor.after i blowed a couple of unilite sets at 80 bucks a pop. I went with a msd pro billet distibutor works and looks great.i'd highly recamend one.

I don't know what problems other folks have had with the Unilite, but I can't seem to duplicte them. I used one in a 73 L-82 vette for 107K miles. I have used any number on race small blocks to trigger a MSD box.

But for the most part points in a good GM distributor setup correctly will work just fine for 80% of the applications.

The HEI that Gene had IMan do is a super deal, removes the coil from the cap to reduce the heat build up, I think.

The MSD billet units are nice, get one with vacuum for the street.

I have a Unilite in my 69 big block, which used to be my daily driver. I have put over 70,000 miles on the Unilite and only had one problem, I blew a module when my alternator/regulator went wild and was pumping out high voltage. The unilite modules are sensitive to high voltage. Mallory now sells a little box that plugs in before the distributor that prevents any of these problems.

I have also heard alot of bad things about them. I am looking at the MSD Street Billet Ready to Run as we speak. Not a bad price either.

I think the real deal Bob is the LED that is the light source can't stand any reverse feed voltage as well as any high voltage. I have not seen this new box, but it is a great idea.

66, I was going to say, anectdotally, I've heard of too many failures. At least buy a new ( spare) module and the box thingy that Bob mentioned.

Man if you saw the beef of one of Ray's HEI units, you wouldnt screw with something as sensitive as an optical pickup. Those will go thru a nuke holocaust and keep timing.

chev66-I've been using the same Unilite since sometime in '91. It has been thoroughly abused, has never failed and has never been a problem.

just got thru an electrical problem which led me to my mallory uni-lite module... they are sensitive to bad grounds AND voltage spikes. (thanks to coppertop, i am now grounded correctly.) i would consider my failure to be my fault for having a bad ground. i am keeping mine for now, but any more trouble and she may have to go!

I've got one(Mallory Comp 9000) thats wore out 3 small blocks, never a problem. I use a Mallory Promaster coil wired per Their instructions with a ballast resistor. There are less expensive distributors that will work fine with the MSD. But, for the street I think the MSD is major overkill. Racers may be able to justify the expense but not me.

Just my humble opinion.

66, I've ran a unilite since 87 or 88 in my 67 small block w/out any problems. Once, for some other problem, I removed the ballast resistor, it worked for a few months, then just died one day. It took me awhile to figure out that I had killed the unilite. About 70 bucks later, I reinstalled the resistor, no problems ever again.

I have run a vacuum advance Unilite for past 8 years with no problems. It was in a small block if that matters. Hope this helps.
