I know this aint a chevelle but I would appreciate anybodys opinion on this. I got a 75 chevy 4x4 with 4:56 gears I think becuase I spin around 3 grand going 60, 33 inch tires and a 350 tranny and motor. My motor wiped the 260HE comp cam and am going to rebuild it. I have headers, edelbrock performer intake, holley 600 with stiffest spring, and its going to have around 8.5 to 9.0 comp. I'm looking at the crane compu cam 254/264, 194/204 at 50, 104 lsa, and 401/423 lift. The other cam is a comp dual energy 255/261, 203/212, 421/451 lift with 110 lsa. I was getting around 12 miles to the gallon but would like a little better because this is my winter ride when the chevelle is parked. I heard the dual pattern cams are suppose to be a little more effeciant on a mild motor. I was kinda leaning toward the comp grind but think I might be better off with the crane or if somebody knows a better cam. Thanks, Kevin

Have you been following Pat's thread?

If not, please go read it.. Great info from a buncha the guys.. It's called "RPM for best gas mileage" and it is right below this one..

Heck, the cams you are talking about are just about what the good old stock, -929 cam is except the centers and height's differ some..

Try a -929 with 1.6" rockers on the intakes and see what happens.. Right Pat..

And I have mentioned a cam like you are talking about in Pat's thread too....

Kevin,

Glad both you and Pat are on to this topic at the same time b/c in these times of high fuel prices, we all need to think about how to get the most mileage for our hard-earned bucks regardless what we drive..

I finally went "corn-popper" back in '86 when my 406 was eating it at the tune of 15mpg/80miles per day for 5 days a week.. I think it was up to around $1.30 or so a gallon back then at one time??

The new '87 Chevy Sprint ER/Suzuki Metro 3-banger/5-speed hatch type car I bought got WAY above 50mpg plumb easy if I woulda slowed down to 60 vs 75 all the time... It was rated at 58/51 and EPA rated it at 72 highway driving really easy and I didn't know it...

Best I ever got out of it was 57..

Bttt... Please keep the good info coming guys..

Pdq do you think the smaller cam would get better mileage? Kevin

Pat,

What do you think! Like i said it is almost like the good old -929 cam, but slightly mor lift and LCA being closer.

Run this odd-ball, theoretical little-bitty cam through a sim. program and see what you think.

250/210/256/216, 104/108, .440" net lift. "SOLID LIFTER"...

I looked at it for my 283 to try to make as much grunt as possible even though it's still a little motor... You know, oxymoron sorta deal, "little motor and grunt"!! AND yet, still be able to rpm her like it likes to run..

I like the almost flat torque curve off idle to 4500 or so rpm!!
