: what was that combo racer1320 was always
GRUMPYVETTE Mar 1st, 04, 1:59 PM what was that combo racer1320 was always posting?
(part LIST?)
has anyone tried a similar combo in a 496 bbc and if so what were your results?
what was the rear gears and stall speed?
I had someone ask for this info and Im not sure I have all the info correct?
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 2:03 PM 454+.060 = 467
· TRW # 2399 pistons with Speed Pro file fit rings
· 10.0 - 10.7 CR depending on deck height, final combustion chamber volume and head gasket used.
· Clevite bearings - mains, rod and cam
· Fel-Pro gaskets
· GM 3/8" rods with ARP bolts and GM crank(cast is fine at this level) with ARP main studs and GM windage tray
· Moroso 6-Quart kicked-out pan # 20401 with pickup # 24440
· Melling oil pump
· Manley or DynaGear double roller timing chain
· #215 closed chamber oval port heads ‘67 - ‘68 with 2.19 / 1.88 valves, gasket matched and bowls blended
· Performer RPM Q-Jet Manifold with GM lifter valley splash shield
· Q-Jet carb with 75 main jet, 45B primary rod, AX secondary rods and B hanger
· ƒ¶" phenolic 4-hole spacer
· GM carb heat shield
· Ultradyne 288 / 296 hydraulic cam with matching springs - double w/damper. cam specs are 231I / 239E duration @ .050 with .550 / .575 lift ground on a 110LSA. Install on a 108 intake centerline.
· Rockers - either crane steel long slots or a roller. Isky are the best aluminum, Crower the best Stainless steel. Neither are needed at the power level.
· 3/8" one piece pushrods Crane or Comp
· MSD ignition- 6AL box, coil and distributer(optional-allows easy curve adjustment)
· Headers - 1 ¾" PRIMARY TUBE WITH 3" collectors. Remove collector(cut off) and install(weld) Flowmaster Scavenger Collectors # C-134214300
· 3" headpipes with 3" crossover and 2.5" tailpipes. All bends to be mandrel. Use Flowmaster Big Block mufflers 3" in and out, offset - offset (quietest performance muffler) or DynoMax Oval RaceMagnum.
· Mallory Comp 140 fuel pump, regulator and filter plumbed to stock 3/8" fuel line.
· Mobil 1 10W-30 oil, Ford type F trans fluid and Mobil 1 gear lube
· indexed spark plugs
With a turbo 400, ATI 10" converter, 3.73 gears and either slicks or DOT slicks this combo will run 11.60’s to 11.90’s depending on weather, tuning and driver. My best was 11.49 @ 115 in mine shaft air weighing 4000+ lbs. on pump gas.
thrasher Mar 1st, 04, 10:49 PM Some updating was done with his combo
950HP carb on a Performer RPM Air Gap SQUARE PORT manifold.
1/2 inch 4 hole spacer on top of a 1/2 inch open spacer.
He later went to a Quick Fuel prepared 1000HP carb and picked up a bit more.
He also swapped to a Custome Comp Cams Silid XE roller.
Last year he went to a new LSM cam Custome Ground, with a duration of 250 something at .050.

He makes it all easy to find
Motor Martyr Mar 1st, 04, 11:21 PM actually it is an LSM grind with 256/262 dur at .050" or very close to that.
The LSA is 107 degrees.
The same grind within 2 degrees can be custom ground by comp cams as an xtreme energy mechanical roller on a 107 lsa.
The motor was rebuilt with small dome Wiesco pistons, now making 11:1 compression.
Crower sportsman connecting rods, and a Crower 4340 steel crank.
he doesnt use a Quick Fuel 1000, and i dont know that he ever has. Instead he is using, and continues to recieve carbs to test from Pro Systems.
Currently running a 1000HP 4150 carb built by Patrick James @ Pro Systems.
The rear gears are 4.10, with a 30" tall Radial ply Hoosier 10.5 slick.
The converter is an 8" ATI treemaster built by Charlie Plott.
Best ET currently stands at 10.37 @ 126.9mph with a best 60ft of 1.36.
I dont think that there is currently a 496 version, although i may be incorrect.
There is a similar motor in 502" using the same #215 heads and, less compression, a 750dp carb, and a smaller XE roller cam.
Currently turning 10.60's.
thrasher Mar 1st, 04, 11:23 PM You are right.
Had Quick Fuel stuck in my head after talking to a friend about carbs graemlins/clonk.gif
Motor Martyr Mar 1st, 04, 11:27 PM not a problem, i figured i would post, as i race with him, and know what is current.
jakeshoe Mar 2nd, 04, 2:34 AM I am building a stroker variant...
.100 over 454, 4.250 stroke, stock rods with work..
XR280SR roller custom ground with a 112 LSA. 242/248@.050 using 1.8 rockers.
10.2 compression with flattops, 390 casting closed chamber ovals ported with 2.19/1.88's.
1 3/4" headers.
GM aluminum hi-rise rect port intake, using a 800 Q-jet and/or a 800 Dp Holley, will be doing some testing.
Goal is a very near stock looking "sleeper".
Aka 375 HP 396 with headers and mild idle.
Engine will be fired in a day or two, waiting on a starter brace...
71454Chevelle Mar 2nd, 04, 5:18 AM With that new LSM cam that Ed is running, what RPM is he shifting at now? I would think that with the additional duration of that cam he would have to shift around 6500.
Do you know what the lift of his new cam is?
mr 4 speed Mar 2nd, 04, 7:22 AM Obviously not the current combo..but the good 'ole flat tappet combo that ran a best of 11.49 with the UD 288/296 cam..which in my book is very impressive, let alone current ET's
Motor Martyr Mar 2nd, 04, 11:59 AM i'm not sure what he shifts at, but the trap rpm is 6600, the radials tires dont grow, so the trap rpm is higher then typical bias ply.

Either he installed the BTE converter and didn't tell anyone, he's running a 4.30 gear, or some of the info provided is wrong :D
jakeshoe Mar 2nd, 04, 1:01 PM He's running 4.56 now.

He's running 4.56 now. I don't think so, Jake. A 4.56 gear with the above mentioned parameters (and using 9% for converter slip, typical of an 8" ATI) would put his trap speed under 120MPH. I know for sure his car runs 126+ MPH through the lights.
jakeshoe Mar 2nd, 04, 4:15 PM I haven't ran it up on a calculator but have spoken with Ed..
Maybe the tire actually has a slightly larger circumference?
Or the converter less slippage smile.gif
kjett Mar 2nd, 04, 4:50 PM He was running 4.11 gears the last time that I spoke with him (a couple of days ago), so I suspect that the trap RPM is less than 6,600. Using a trap speed of 127, tire height of 30.5", a trans ratio of 1.05, and 4.11 gears the trap RPM is 6,038. Using those exact same values and changing the rear gear to 4.56 yields 6,699 at the stripe. Who knows? The only thing that's for sure is his car hauls a$$ ;)
Motor Martyr Mar 2nd, 04, 5:38 PM Email him i could be wrong.

jakeshoe Mar 3rd, 04, 4:11 AM Ken,
If you spoke with him 2-3 days ago your info is more recent. smile.gif
