: Got some electrical gremlins !!
BillsCamino Aug 24th, 07, 10:31 AM Two issues...
First, what would be the procedure for testing the wiper motor circuit? This is a two speed, 3 connector system in a '66 Malibu. I have power to both yellow wires but none from the blue. Tried with key on, switch on. The motor itself does have a good ground (I probe checked).
I replaced the motor but still no wiper action. I'm suspecting a bad switch...
Second, the horn blows sometimes when turning the steering wheel. :) Kind of funny but also annoying at times. Ideas on whats going on there? Stock wheel/non tilt column that I just replaced the turn signal switch on.
elcamino66 Aug 24th, 07, 12:59 PM Bill, Did you put the star washer on the wiper switch before you put it in the dash. The switch has to be grounded good before it will work. Don`t ask how I know!! On the horn, it sounds like its getting ground some where in the column.
BillsCamino Aug 24th, 07, 8:16 PM Thanks Tommy!
I'm pretty sure the washer is there. I'm trying to find a way to test the circuit and prove out that it's a bad switch. Electrical things are not my strong suit. :(
I'm afraid to install my wiper arms without first knowing if the motor is parked. I bought this car with no engine so I have no way of knowing if this stuff previously worked correctly.
Chuck Aug 24th, 07, 8:23 PM The horn gets ground through a round ring and then goes to ground when you press the button. It sounds like you may have an isolation problem. The horn button or bar should connect to one side of the horn ring and get grounded when the previously isolated ring hits ground by pushing the button. I would suspect the button assembly first. The actual wire shouldn't be moving in the column but, if it the horn blowing is repeatable you might remove the horn ring assembly and drive it. If it blows, you have a short in the horn wire inside the coulmn. If not it's in the horn button/switch assembly itself.
Good luck
Chuck

Check this thread (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182259&highlight=wiper+motor+wiring) I dont know if it will help?
And another one (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157952&highlight=wiper+motor+wiring)
And the final one to check out (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147860&highlight=wiper+motor+wiring)
BillsCamino Aug 26th, 07, 9:09 AM Thanks guys...now I've got some investigative work to do.
Not quite sure if I've re-assembled the steering wheel correctly Chuck. 'Ya got me thinking...Gonna pull it apart and recheck.
Great links Brad!
BillsCamino Aug 28th, 07, 11:19 AM Update...
Found one problem; On the horn, the canceling cam's spring loaded plunger was broken where it passes thru the steering wheel hub, allowing the little spring to make occasional contact. :(
Still working on the wiper issue...

There should be power on the yellow wires anytime the key is on, the wiper works by grounding the other wires. You can bypass the switch by directly grounding the other wires. For testing the switch, make sure it is well grounded to the dash.
bln Aug 28th, 07, 10:13 PM you didnt tap into the wiper hot wire for a hot for something else did you? thats a no no, dont ask me how i know ;)

Why is that Dave?
I've seen it recommended on here several times for a "key on" circuit for an electric choke or what not.

Same here Dave...was there a problem with the choke/wiper function??
But to answer your question...not using an electric choke on the wagon...it's got a Q-jet.
