: Will Lacquer thinner effect Jet Hot coated headers?

My temperature wire slipped off the sending unit and obviously sat against the header for a while. Some of the plastic from the wire clip protector melted on the header tube. The stuff feels rock hard.

Will lacquer thinner get it off and not effect the "Jet Hot" header finish (just had them redone last year)? Would something else work better?

Appreciate it.

Thinner will work, may help to warm them up a bit then wipe it off.

Easy on the polish though, unless you want to polish the WHOLE header, ask how I know this:(

I gave it a good soaking with the header cold and another good soaking with the header warm. Didn't even make a dent in it. That blemish is as hard as nails. Thanks anyway guys.

I've sent an email to the coating company to see if they have any ideas. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome.

I use ultra fine steel wool on mine. I used brake cleaner on some stains , oil is the worse thats when the steel wool works.

What chemical would melt or dissolve the plastic the wire connector is made from? Melted or not, it's still plastic and I'd think you'd need some pretty harsh stuff to get it off of there. Have you tried some 0000 steel wool?

How about carb cleaner? That stuff man handles plastic.

I will put steel wool and carb cleaner on the option list. Thanks guys.

I have a suggestion!!! Let me know if you want to hear it...
No Bill, I will not be putting on manifolds and a smog setup :noway:

Didn't think lacquer would melt plastic. I would try to very carefully slice it off the best you can. Anything strong even to dissolve the plastic may harm the ceramic.

I've used Bar Keeper's Friend to clean off baked on oil and antifreeze stains on my headers. Does a nce job, it is less abrasive than steel wool or other cleansers.

With the heat from the header it's not plastic any more, it's carbon. Just take a razor blade and scrape it off.

Don, I had almost the same thing happen last year with my ceramic coated headers. I was driving down the road and a huge piece of yellow caution tape blew under my car. By the time I pulled over and looked underneath, it had melted to my collecters and header tubes. What a mess! My fix was to run the car in my driveway, let it sit for about ten mins and then scrape off the softened crap with a razor blade. After I used superfine steel wool to take off the left over residue. It was VERY time consuming but in the end it worked out and have had no problem with the finish since.

SOLVENTS WILL NOT WORK. Ask me why.

How about an ice cube? Hold it against the melted plastic and it may become brittle enough with the cold to break off.
Also, acetone will dissolve plastic but not sure how it will effect the header coating. Maybe test it in another less obvious spot.
