: Bracing the frame?

Just wondering if anyone has braced or boxed their frames. Just saw Lou on MuscleCar brace a GTO frame and started thinking. I'm dropping a 502 in a 70 Chevelle and I'm not sure if it is necessary or not. Also, any suggestions on the how? Thanks, Mike

Na, you'll be alright, lots of us on here running big blocks with no frame problems.

If you want to box the frame, look at a convertible frame, measure and duplicate. Measure the thickness of the frame and purchase the same thickness metal. Before welding, always disconnect your battery. Make a Template out of Cardboard in the frame and trace it on to your new metal. Cut it out with a Plasma Cutter. Prime with weld through primer. Tack into place. Remember to criss cross your tacks and cool down immediately with air from your compressor because you do not want to get the metal too hot and warp the frame. When finished laying all of your tacks, start connecting the tacks, again going from one side to the other while cooling the welds down. Grind your welds smooth and start over again at another spot on the frame.
Hope this helps,
Tory

Yes I have boxed and braced my frame. Is in needed? No, in my opinion. Look at my website and search around in here. There have been several post on the benefits of boxing a frame.

Thanks, guys. Think I'm gonna pass on the bracing... Mike

The simplest way to brace the frame is to replace all the rotted frame-to-body bushings; preferably with something a bit firmer than rubber.

The body has some amount of strength--torsional and beam--and by tying it to the frame you'd increase the total strength of the structure.

You probably need new bushings there anyway...
