why are they there? are there sensores behind them or something? i saw them and was curious what they are for.

There is a threaded hole behind there, and an eyebolt in the trunk with the spare. You thread the eyebolt into the hole and the wrecker driver hooks into the eyebolt to winch the car up onto the rollback. No hooks, no undercarriage damage, no laying on your back in the rain.

On some newer cars, particularly european ones, I think they are for towing points. The Volvo wagon we had at work had those little square plastic covers on the bumpers. The if you took those off, , you'r find a threaded hole. The car came with a giant threaded eye bolt that screwed into the bumper under that plug.

If you remove the plug the opening becomes a deer whistle to warn away deer.;)
