: Chicken Coupe Update
Chicken Coupe Aug 21st, 07, 4:50 PM After a slight delay (I had promised my 21 year old son that I would keep it one piece until he came back from his Summer college classes and job to take him for a ride. Just like to report that he thinks I need to install grab handles. "Dad, when you do that (1st gear, floored, reaching 6K RPM) you need to be holding on to something!").
I finally got started last week on the initial teardown of the Coupe. Just figured I would share a few photos and thoughts.
I learned:
That the 1st 5 min of Overhaulin takes 3 1/2 days in real life

Like that special effect-total luck
Draining an "empty" fuel tank took 4 hours
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x141/fppb1/Disassembly/IMG_1077.jpg
Someone added a brazed-in 1/2 fuel pick-up tube along the way

Getting our other 2 sons involved was great and they had a good time

No rot here

Or here

(based on the SS emblem mountings on both, they're real SS fenders)
After doing the engine, installing ladder bars, comp clutch, scattershield, etc, you used THAT trans mount?
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x141/fppb1/Disassembly/IMG_1164.jpg
The reason it was hard to get into gear was because the clutch springs were grinding away the flywheel bolts.

Nothing that hammering a metric socket on them can't cure
Port matched intake ports, nice cyl. hone, and TRW forged pistons. There's hope yet there is a 4 bolt block under the oil pan.

There ain't no build sheet, no where, no how.

Hope you enjoyed
rubadub Aug 21st, 07, 5:29 PM I liked it.

rubadub Aug 21st, 07, 5:31 PM Do you want us to start trying to tell you how to do everything, or should we stay in the truck and just observe.:)
Rob
Chicken Coupe Aug 21st, 07, 6:31 PM Rob you are very funny! Feel free to give me advice. As they say "X" number of heads is better than one. With my lack of experience, you might want to say "The village has found it's idiot!"
On the flip side I was very good at this 30-some yrs ago.
rubadub Aug 21st, 07, 7:40 PM Before we give advice, you need to fill out this questionaire.
#1 How old are you
#2 Are you mentally sound strong enough to take our nit picking
#3 How much money do you have, so we can decide how you should spend it
#4 Are you able to produce pictures, when ''WE'' want them
#5 We need a list of tools you have acess to
#6 #3 and #5 could be grouped together
#7 If we help, do you promise you will not do anything, unless you run it by us
#8 List all the jobs you have had, and especially any you were fired at.
#9 Do you have a working wife that makes tons of money, if you do we can help you manipulate her, so she won't figure out how much your actually spending on the car
#10 Also any buddies getting in there and trying to help, tell them up front, they will be dealing with us directly.
#11 This is just the preliminary questionaire, if your up to specs, we can let you fill out the second one.:)

Then it has to go before a full board of review before your approved. Check the members only forum, you'll see it when it comes up for a vote.:p
Chicken Coupe Aug 22nd, 07, 8:23 AM If I do all that do we get to wear cool hats, meet in secret, and learn the truth behind the DiVinci Files?

no but you'll find out who killed Kennedy & the location of Jimmy Hoffa's body!;)
Chicken Coupe Aug 22nd, 07, 9:18 AM I really don't care to know those things, but if we could divi up a small portion of the National Treasure, questions 3, 5, and 6 are not an issue!
rubadub Aug 22nd, 07, 3:15 PM You take good clear pictures, and being your just starting out with it, theres a ton of stuff we can learn from this.
If at all possible, keep the pictures coming, you would be surprised at how many people will learn from this, including myself.
The picture of the bolts and how you said a 12 pt socket would get them off, that was good, your showing us the problem and telling us how to fix it at the same time. Keep up the good work.

DZAUTO Aug 22nd, 07, 6:39 PM There should be MORE than enough room for the hub of the clutch disc to clear the flywheel bolts!!!!!!!!!!
Regardless of what someone told you about that flywheel, I genuinely believe that it has been resurfaced too much or several times.
Chicken Coupe Aug 22nd, 07, 7:37 PM Thanks again for the positive feedback. DZAUTO good point on th resurfacing. Do you have any input as to how to tell if it has been ground down as you suspect?

I agree I just took a clutch assembly out of a customers car. The bolt heads had been ground to half the original thikness because the flywheel was ground to far; and not from rubbing but by the yayhoo that put the clutch in. Stock flywheels are under $100, High performance units around $250. Why take the chance on a part that is so hard to get to. Get new bolts too :D
mr 4 speed Aug 24th, 07, 8:40 AM Fred, nice looking 70 SS you got there..good luck with everything!
Chicken Coupe Aug 24th, 07, 10:58 AM Thanks for all the positive support comments and the info on the customer's clutch.
Yes there was a Yayhoo working on this car in the not too distant past. it just drives me batty that there are so many really good parts on the car and then all of a sudden you come across things like the trans mount, the flywheel, a nearly seized front u-joint, mis-matched bolts, unpainted water pump and headers, etc.
But after taking most of the car apart it seems that I got a fair deal on it. I didn't steal it. I don't think I overpaid either. Like i said, fair. Having spent most of it's life in a TX climate, then having been 1/2 done by someone, then run hard for a short while (1 summer) by some rich guy, then tucked away in storage for almost 9 years by someone who knew what he was doing, has kept this car from total destruction.
My goal was to find a car with a good powerplant (if you are a good engine guy/gal, please check my post under engines for "pan off" what do these parts mean. I got some good replies but I am still not 100% sure what I have) rear axle, very rust free underbody, and little body rot. So far that's what I found.
Anyway...this site continues to be unbelievably GREAT. Thanks to everyone for the comments and info!
Jerry Briggs Aug 24th, 07, 12:47 PM Fred, keep up with the pix and info. You are doing great!
