I brought one of our old 1 ton service vans up from the farm and gave it to my nephew but he gave it back because it wouldn't shift into third gear.
It has 192,000 miles so I figured the 4L80E transmission was probably shot.
I started driving it back down to park it at the farm which is 35 miles away and noticed the "check engine soon" light was on.
After driving about 5 miles in second gear, all of a sudden the check engine light went out and at the same time it shifted into 4th gear, then a couple of miles down the road - light back on and it shifted back down into 2nd gear - again a couple more miles - light back off - back to 4th gear where it stayed for the rest of the trip.
Anyone familiar with those symptoms?
