Do you need to change the lock cylinder, or the ignition switch? To change the ignition switch, you need to drop the column as its on top of column near firewall.

You didn't mention if you had a standard (non-adjustable) or a tilt column. I will guess that it is most likely a standard column because there just weren't very many Chevelles with tilt columns in 1969.

A common misconception if that the ignition switch is part of the ignition lock cylinder on the GM locking steering columns. That is not true. Starting in 1969 the ignition lock cylinder is mounted in the steering column head. The ignition switch was moved down under the dash and mounted on top of the steering column jacket. (This made hot wiring and trying to steal the car a lot more difficult - unfortunately it made servicing the ignition switch more diffiecult as well.)

I have a series of papers and drawings that will assist you in replacing the ignition lock cylinder (mounted in the column head where you stick your ignition key).

Or if you want need to change the ignition switch you will need to drop the column to get to it. There is a second set of papers that describes dropping the column, replacing and adjusting the actual switch.
