I'm not sure what gears I have now, it's an open 10 bolt (code CB1019W).
I would like to know what's in it and if I would need to change carriers to go up to 3.55s or higher.
thanks for any info you can give.

you can tell what you've got inside if you jack the car up, spin the rear wheels by hand, and find the ratio of driveshaft turns to wheel turns.... example: if the wheel turns 1 revolution to the driveshaft's 3.5 revolutions, you have a 3.55:1 rear gear ratio.
you can also tell if it's a posi or open diff if the while turning the tires by hand, they spin together in the same direction or in opposite directions. i believe posi spins opposite, and open spins in the same direction, if i'm not mistaken...
for a '64 to '72 chevelle 8.2 10-bolt, you will need to replace the carrier if you cross over the 3.08 ratio... for example, if you go from 2.73 to say, 3.73 or 4.56, you will need to replace the existing 2-series carrier with a 3 series.

I jacked up the car and it's a bit past 3 and a quarter turns for one turn of the tire. I guess 3.36:1 is about on target.
Since it came with a gear higher than 3.08 would i need to change carriers to swap in a set of 3.73s?

nope.... 3.36 and 3.73 share the same carrier
