: Quick Help, Rockers/ Camshaft 454
feedphillipnow Feb 19th, 05, 9:59 PM Well Ive gotten to the point of finally setting my rockers, atleast good enough to get my manifold on. Before I put on my intake I am wondering this: I put my cam in like 4 weeks ago with the red lube that it comes with all over the lifters and cam lobes, if it sits will it drip off or dry out? Because I just primed the engine with oil tonight, so it sat a while.... need more? Or will it be ok? I also have some black engine assembly lube. Not sure what and if I should do.
Thanks!

I would suggest that you pull one lifter at a time, and apply a heavy dose of the Black Engine Assembly lube (this may be Molylube or close to it). Don't apply it to the sides of the lifters, they need to spin in their bores.
Before you fire the eigine for the first time, reprime the engine, with your drill/adapter for the oil pump. Make sure to rotate the engine 90 degrees, prime, rotate 90 degrees, prime, etc. Having the spark plugs out, will make this a lot easier. Also make sure you have oil showing up in each rocker arm. If you have primed it correctly, this will be the case. Have someone near by to set your timing, if possible, after you fire it up. Watch the Temp gauge and don't let it overheat, no matter what.
Good luck,
Fred.
feedphillipnow Feb 19th, 05, 10:24 PM Thanks Fred,
Sounds good, I won't be firing it for another paycheck though. Have to pickup my Distributor still! I'll bump it over 90 degrees then prime and re-lube, and so on. I made my own drill adapter, it's a little ganky but it works.
feedphillipnow Feb 19th, 05, 10:43 PM Also im turning over the engine with a remote starter when I set the rockers... I was watching the lobes and the lifters passing over them as the engine bumps over. The lobes look like they dry out pretty quick, I keep putting more lube and oil on them... not sure if thats right.

As long as you have a coating of Moly Lube on the bottom of the lifters you should be ok. I normally put it on every lobe and on every lifter when I assemble an engine. The only time, I use the oil priming pump, is just before I fire the engine. I let the Assembly lube do it's work, for just adjusting the rockers. I would suggest using EOS from GM, adding one can of this, as always been a habit. I've never lost a lobe, and I feel that this really helps. I have no proof of that, just a gut feeling.

As far as the pre oiling goes, I've had a couple of big blocks that never got oil to the top very well until I fired them off. I got my drill so hot that I thought it would melt.
As soon as I fired them there was plenty of oil on top, I looked in through the oil fill holes. Prime it well but don't be surprised if oil is slow to the top end.
