I have a 350 (year 80 -86) with HEI DIST. , headers, holley 670 street avenger, 8mm wires, lots of stock.

heres the question i have the timing at 8 degrees. what is the range it is suppose to be between. the car sounds great right now. very strong. no smoke, no back fire.

next question is should the car idle down when i remove vac. advance hose from carb? what would make it not idle down when hose is removed from vac. advance? would the vac advance be bad?

should i add i know very little about timing. the guy who set timing is unsure about *'s and he said engine should cut out a little when we disconnect hose from vac advance. in my car there is no change when you remove hose.

Wayne,

Timing should be set according to performance of the engine without the engine pinging. Total timing is also important if you have a cam larger than stock. I would continue to advance the timing by 2 degrees at a time until the engine starts to lay down or you hear pinging. Then back the timing down 2 degrees.

No, your idle should not change when the vacuum advance is pulled off, unless the hose is below the throttle plates of the carb. Remove the hose from the vacuum advance and put your finger over the end of the hose, then rev the engine a little, you should feel the vacuum after the throttle is opened a little.
