: Clutch Question
DougA Aug 23rd, 04, 8:51 AM Did a dumb thing.Tried to a burnout with 4 big guys in the car, thought I was in first, was in third.Car didnt move much but the rpms went way up and could smell the clutch burning. After things cooled off clutch seems ok,but can it be trusted? If its time for a clutch any recommendations?454,M22,373 posi.Thanks.
427L88 Aug 23rd, 04, 9:14 AM No , it cannot. Once you glaze it, it'll get progressively worse and worse. Same thing happened to me. stock GM HD11". Glazed it on the car's first shakedown run since the Muncie linkages were fried and couldn't get 1st. Started in third. Slight glaze. Well then came the new BFG DR275s on the back. First good launch I thought I was spinning the tires. Nope. Cabin filled with that acrid smell and it was toast. They just won't recover.
Centerforce Dual Friction clutch is the way to go IMHO. Caution, when I replaced the fried stocker with the CF, I had to lengthen the clutch fork adjusting rod. Actually used a grade 8 bolt of proper thread, cutoff and ground to a nice round nose shape. It's common. Be prepared for it. Also, resurface the flywheel. I just cleaned it the first time and got chatter.
Bob Tiley Aug 24th, 04, 12:23 AM Depends upon the clutch - I have smoked a Centerforce plenty of times and it still works well. If it works fine forget about it, but if it starts to slip under acceleration you need a new Centerforce Gold, II or Dual Friction.
Go ahead and try it. If it keeps working, you're okay. If not, then it'd be new clutch time. If you're doing a fair amount of track running and hooking with slicks, I'd say the Dual Friction Centerforce is the way to go. We tried the Gold Series and toasted it after one season.
Gene is right about that fork adjusting rod. We did the exact same thing that he did - modified a grade 8 bolt. It's been fine since then. Steel flywheel is a good addition too, if you're racing it.
DougA Aug 24th, 04, 8:22 PM Thanks guys,no I dont race it ,just take it out in the country and crank it every now and then.Tried to pull a holeshot yesterday(in first gear)and I thought I heard it slip again.Dont know what clutch is in it but its been in there since 97 when the motor was rebuilt.Guess its time to put one in.
427L88 Aug 25th, 04, 12:08 PM If you don't race it, I would think a Centerforce Gold is just fine. Actually, if you don't glaze it, the GM one is fine. But once you glaze it, it sure deteriorates quickly.
Tom, I should think they'd tell you that in the install instructions, or include one with the clutch, wouldn't ya think??
DougA Aug 25th, 04, 4:30 PM Looking in the Jegs cat.is the Centerforce II the gold? Looks like thats the one i need.My drivetrain is pretty stock M-22,do i use the 1 1/8 by 10 spline 11"?
caru68 Aug 25th, 04, 4:38 PM That is the size you want, but go with the Dual Friction. It is a little more money, but it will take more abuse than the standard Gold unit. The weights on the diaphragm fingers help to apply pressure as the RPMs go up, but the pedal pressure is about the same as the Gold unit, maybe slightly higher pedal pressure. Do it right while it's apart and you'll be much happier in the long run.

Doug,
If you don't know how many splines your input shaft has, you'll have to pull it out first and have a look at it. Far as I know there's only fine spline and coarse.
DougA Aug 25th, 04, 5:24 PM The M-22 in my car is the original it came with,1970 matching serial #to the cars vin would it be the coarse sline(10)?
427L88 Aug 25th, 04, 6:03 PM Oh, I don't think so, do beleive the M22s are mostly 26-spline. Double check it.
