: 454, which cam to use?

This is my first question on this forum. Thanks in advance for your response.

I need advice on which cam to use in my car. It is torn down to the short block and I would really like to do this right the first time. I will be using an Arizona Speed & Marine port injection setup, oval ports on a street driven car. Unknown, very restrictive exhaust. You probably think that's nuts but my open header days are over. I would like to end up with something like a UPS truck rumble. Here is what I have so far:

454, .030 over
Flat top pistons
Dual 57mm throttle body w/ plenum
12" long crossover ports with 3.69sq in inlets and 3.08 sq in ports @ head (standard oval port).
Cam TBD
Edelbrock heads w/100cc chambers, EDL-60499
3:08 rear
TKO-500 (3.27 first gear, .68 fifth)
Weight 3300lbs

Thanks

BBShark,

You need to add a few more details, like static compression, valve size, type of Cam, solid, solid roller, Hydr roller or just hydr. The compression and RPM you plan on running have a lot to do with the cam your going to use. With you setup, I expect you want a lot of low end push.

Something along the line of the VooDoo 268 in the new Luanti line should do it. XE274 in the Comp line if you don't mind a wee bit-o-noise, potentially. These are standard hydraulic lifters and would work well with 9:1.

Thanks for the responses.

SS4Speed, I have 2.19 valve head and want to run a hydraulic cam. My static compression will be 9.3 to 1.

What should I be looking for with a "tuned" intake and a restrictive exhaust. Does a restrictive exhaust, in a street driven car change what you want in a cam?

How restrictive is the exhaust? You should list the components. For example, do you have headers? If so what size primary tube, full length or shorties, size of collector tube (length and diameter), size of the head pipes, what type of muffler, diameter of tailpipes if you have them.

If it is really restrictive, you're going to want more duration on the exhaust side of the cam compared to your intake side, especially if you expect your intake system to be really efficient.

That's just advice in general, I'll leave the cam recommendation to the big dogs.

Yes, imho too, a 268/270 cam should do you nicely...

Probably a split duration one due to your terrible exhaust??

have you thought about Sanderson cast-iron headers to flow better then stock, but yet be able to muffle the "tinging/dinging" that headers create due to the thin tubes??

Pricey but should be some better then stock, imho...

Slowpoke 70, that the kind of information I'm looking for (large exhaust duration). I realize I am nuts for using a restrictive exhaust but I'm not looking for 500 HP either. If I had 400HP and a ton of torque I would be happy. Anyone have cutouts that come on at WOT?

pdq67, I do not have any of the exhaust parts. I do have cast iron manifolds with a 2 1/2" outlet. I will probably use them (I may have them extrusion honed). I know what your saying about the "tinging" sound.

My Hedman Elite Headers have a much more subdued tone. The primary tubes are heavier gauge (14 think( really helps to control the sound).

If all you want is a street car to put your foot into occasionally then spend your money on making your components live. Use your exhaust for awhile and get your tranny built for the torque and get your rear end right. But anticipate improving your engine's performance when making these decisions as well as whether you'll get more serious as in strip use. Most of us end up wanting more power and just plain tinkering with it.

If all you're going to do is cruise then just have safe fun.
